CONSIDERATION REQUESTED FOR NEW MOTORIST ‘Don’t Honk Your Horn When Novice Kills Engine/ Says Stoops. The automobile in some of its aspects has brought almost the ultimate in “man's inhumanity to man" in the opinion of Todd Stoops, manager of the Hoosier Motor Club. Stoops voiced this thought in discussing the attitude of motorists toward one another in that most common of all embarrassing moments on the highway—when one has stalled one’s motor. Linking this problem with the courtesy campaign that has long been a feature of the program of the American Automobile Association and its 800 affiliated clubs, Stoops said: Unhappy Attitude “With a great many new cars and new drivers on the streets' this season, it seems that I never have seen so much of this particularly unhappy attitude. “The blaring of horns that usually acompanies such a circumstance would indicate that a catastrophe had happened. It is all so unnecessary and, in nine out of ten cases, it is positively brutal in its thoughtlessness. The motorist, man or worn-

He knows that It made him absolutely helpless and bewildered to stall an engine in traffic, but this was nothing to the mental state that followed when intolerant, impatient, thought-., dopiTyankee tourists American Travelers on Paris Trains Given Doctored Cigarets. Bu United Press PARIS, Aug. 13.—Tourists from the American boats arriving at Cherbourg and Havre and taking the train for Paris have reported to the police several times in the last month that a gang of confidence men has been reaping a big harvest by means of doped cigarets handed to the victim by a benevolent-lnoking man casually met within the station or on the train. The crook usually waits until he spots a man traveling alone, strikes up a conversation and offers the clgfirst time it is easy to talk to him about what he should see in the gay capital. If he accepts the smoke, conversation becomes hazy, the tourist gets dizzy and gradually his senses leave him. When he is awakened at Paris —boat trains come through without a ston—he is without his roll, and oftetn without his passport. His friends made It a complete success by presenting him with everything from an automobile to a great Dane dog. The automobile was an eight-cylinder affair of the latest sport make.

Help Out! “How much simpler for every one concerned if the experienced motorist would offer the advantage of his greater knowledge in helping the novice out of so trying a predicament? “It seems to me that it is a thought that . motordom would do well to keep in mind, because with the greater popularity of automobiles, it will be one to which one will have opportunity for frequent reference.” LONDON GASPS AT DANCE Greatly Abbreviated Costumes Thrill Society. Bn Inited Press LONDON, Aug. 13.—London society is still gasping over the variety of costumes —some allegedly greatly abbreviated—worn by some of the guests who attended the mask dance given by the Duchess of Sutherland at Hampden House. Prominent among those in attendance were the King and Queen of Spain, who did not appear in mask dress and the Prince of Wales and his brother, Prince Henry, both of whom appeared in sheik’s dress. Everybody was there and “everybody” in England means all who count for anything in official blue books. The greatest sensation of the evening was caused wherr-elght of the most beautiful women in the United Kingdom appeared as a rowing crew fron. Eaton. The crew had a coxswain, Alfred Duff-Cooper, husband of Lady Diana Manners. He shouted orders to his crew as they

rowed their cardboard boat across the ballroom floor. They afterwards fell exhausted into the depths of the craft. WOMEN GO .SOXLESS Bn United Press LONDON.—Stockingless stockings have again become fashionable in London during the recent hot weather. Special shades of powder are used on bare legs to give them the appearance of being clad in flesh-col-ored stockings. One well-known society figure was recently observed to have painted a faint line down the back of her leg to simulate the seam of a stocking.
