FOUR MURDERS STILL UNSOLVED* (Continued Fron| Tage 1) perfectly that the fellows who killed Haag wanted that ring he was wearing. It was an expensive gem.” Haag, local drug company official, was slain by two men May 17, while lunching with a woman companion at Green Mill dance resort, northeast of the city. His valuable diamond ring was shot from hia finger, but not stolen. The slayers have not been apprehended. A good description was obtained of them. The resort Is for sale. Diamond, Woman Again Oddly enough, a valuable diamond and women companion were parts of the next unsolved murder story. When these murders are solved they are not stories any longer. The mystery element has collapsed. Worley's best recollecton was that the Hence Orme slaying was the next best murder story. Parked, with a woman friend, on a lonely roads north of the city, Orme, wealthy, widower, clubman and devotee of sports, was the victim of a nervous highwayman four years ago. Fatally wounded, he struggled back into his machine from which he had alighted at the robber’s command, drove half a mile away, telephoned police and went to a hospital where he died. The slayer still is at lar^e. Body on Tracks Nearly two years ago, the body of Mrs. Helen Hager Whelchel, a young widow, was found on the Big Four Railroad tracks at High School Rd. John Thomas Shaw, Negro, was arrested, implicated, arraigned, tried and convicted. He secured anew trial. A jury at Martinsville disagreed. The third time he faced a Jury, he was acquitted. Since then he has written a book about his "persecution.” The slaying of -Jilt's. Whelchel Is unsolved. "We always had the idea that Shaw was guilty," was Worley's explanation. Dead In Bed In 1908, Dr. Helena Knahe, eccentric physiclaA, with a large circle of friends, was found dead In her bed at a hotel near the downtown district with her throat slashed from ear to ear. An hour elapsed between the finding of the body and notification of police. Under the circumstances there was no possibility of "suicide, it was said. It is still a story. Police would like to know where to look for the slayers.
VACATIONS VOU MIGHTHAVE HAD (Continued From Page ,1) 4l[ In Switzerland he is, that ought to suit in August.” "Don’t think the average reader would care much about yodeling—” the editor objected, but I could see he was weakening. "Yodeling’s elegant for your health and right here in the United States we have plenty of good mountains to practice in. Now William Mooney, Jr., is following one of the Hoosier Motor Clilb routes up Into the White and Green mountains of New Hampshire. Think of viewing scenic Lake Champlain this weather a V coming down along the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River—” “And simply oodles of Indianapolis folks are visiting Europe this year. Ralph Lemcke and Russell Fortune, with their respective families, are crossing Germanyi Russia, and Poland. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Farrington after taking a general European trip have arrived in Naples. They will visit PompeifT Mt. Vesuvius and other points in Italy. Too Warm, Perhaps “That sounds too warm for this weather, though. Perhaps the average reader would rather think about how fine the ocean trip going over would be—about catching deep sea fish and swimming in great waves with lots of foam on top of 'em—“And Dr. F. W. Foxworthy. He’s tarpon fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.Sounds warim too, though. think about Coferado. That’s a August occupation. Mountain climbign, horseback riding along enchanting lakes, glaciers in National Park or the Yellowstone. “Travel’s about equally .divided tc. every part hf the country,” says T. A. Joyce at the Information desk at the Union Station. "The West was never so popular before. On theother hand, a lot of folks are vacationing in the East. New England States. Boston and New York. Travel’s been good this year.” “Now why wouldn’t vacations make a good story?” I asked. “Write one,” said the city editor. So here It ia.
