Bu United Prexx Incomplete returns from primary elections in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma today pointed to at le. st “modified wet" victors in the Missouri senatorial 'contests, defeat of what little Ku-Klux Klan influence there was in the Kansas primary and victory for Klan candidates in Oklahoma. Nomination of Senator George H. Williams, Republican, and Representative Harry B. Hawes, Democrat, in the Missouri senatorial race over their dry opponents, was ap parent in view of their leads of approximately 50,000. Williams, incumbent, has stated he is personally opposed to the Eighteenth Amendment, but favors its enforcement so long as it is a law. HaWes has taken his stand for mortification of the Volstead law within the limits of the Eighteenth Amendment. Senator Charles Curtis. Republican, has been renominated in Kan sas. returns indicate, and in the State contests thoser candidates posed by Klan elements were lead lng. i Partial returns in Oklahoma showed Senator J. C. Halcombe, Gabsden, Okla., who wrecked three stolen autos leading police in a wild chase across central Illinois, admitted today he was a drug addict. Halcombe wrecked his first machine when he roared through here miles an hour and crashed Into a load of sand. He seized another car and sped through a local cenietery, crashing into a gravel truck. He hid behind tombstones until police who were hunting him left their auto. He jumped into it and drove to Liverty, 111., twenty miles away, where he wrecked it. This time flying glass cut a tendon in his foot and he was unable to escape.

Today they turn out 48,600,000 gallons from their breweries, themselves drinking the very considerable percentage they do not export. Beer is fast displacing sake, which has to be heated to be palatable and which cannot be, as a consequence, served quickly from bars or on case tables. He Who Didn’t Have Nerve to Kill Himself When ( Wife Did, Eats. Again Bu United Prexx MIAMI. Fla., Aug. 4.—Baron Rryce-Garrett, facing a manslaughter charate in connection with his wife's leap to death last week, today abandoned his hunger strike. He breakfasted substantially at Jaekson Memorial Hospital, where he was taken when a coroner’s jury absolved him of blame in his wife's death. Late Tuesday a capias warrant charging him with manslaughter was issued. His breakfast marked the second time the Baron had failed in an attempt to keep his part of his suicide pact with his opera singer wife. He apparently was attempting to hang himself Saturday when police found him after the Baroness’ death. Under Florida law, abetting a suicide constitutes manslaughter. The admitted suicide pact between the Baron and his wife, and th.e domination he exerted over her through the Yogie philosophy both espoused, is sufficient evidence to warrant placing the manslaughter charge against him, Ted Elliott, as- , sistant county solicitor said. Resignation of an assistant fire chief and a police department shakeup involving fourteen men Tuesday were ascribed by board of safety members today as a move to promote men of the ranks who have demonstrated executive ability. The board Tuesday accepted the resignation of Kenneth W. Burns as first assistant fire chief, restored his former captaincy and named Ernest L. Hinchman, battalion chief of district No. 2, as his successor. Police department reductions were. Sergt. Warren McClure to patrolman, Motor Policeman George R Liese to patrolman, Sergt. Oscar J. Queisser to traffieman and Detective Sergeants Harry Smith, Otto Maas. Benjamin Lansing and Edwin Ba ! ) to patrolmen. • • Patrolman Roy A. COLD MIXTURE FOR STREETPATCHING TO REM TESTS Board Will Investigate Before Ordering Asphalt • Plant Closed. The board of works will conduct for several months extensive tests of “amasite," anew cold-mixture material for repairing improved streets, before ordering discontinuance of the municipal asphalt plant, Roy C. Shaneberger, board president, said today. “The board will inspect the effect of these hot days on the patches of “amasite” and will gauge the general durability of the material after it has ben laid for several months, before so radically changing the system of repairing streets," he said. Mayor Asks Report Shaneberger said Mayor Duvall had asked him to determine whether the city . plant is a liability or an asset, before final submission of the board of works budget for 1927. Shaneberger early this year blocked an attempt to close the city asphalt plant. Its discontinuance has been advocated by City Engineer George G. Schmidt and a number of city hall politicians, who have contended that the material lought from private contractors and laid by city workmen is cheaper for patching asphalt streets. ~ Hearings Today • Shaneberger said if the tests of the cold-mixture products prove successful, the board is not bound to buy the "amasite” brand, but will consider others. The board of works today was to hold public hearings on resolutions to widen Sixteenth St. from Meridian St. to Northwestern Ave. and Forty-Sixth St., from Meridian St. to Sunset Ave.
