CATHOLICS HOLD FINAL RITES IN CHURCHESTODAY Sacred Places Will Be Abandoned Saturday in Law Protest. By A. W. Folder Unitecl Presit Staff Correspondent, f. MEXICO CITY, July 30.—Millions of Catholics gathered at shrines and churches today throughout Mexico to participate in the final rites of the church before the clergy abandons the sacred places Saturday In protest against religious laws, limiting activities of priests or ministers of any sect, which become effective Sunday. The Government has ordered municipal authorities to appoint committees to take over the property. Troops Ready Every precaution has been taken disorder. All Catholics and other persons without licenses for •possessing arms will be deprived of their weapons. Troops have been ordered to be on call in their barracks. i Meanwhile, the Catholic League for the Defense of Religious Liberty is organizing a boycott with which It hopes to coerce the government fyom its position. Two sources of trouble are: The labor demonstration In support of the socialist government, Sunday, and among the Indians, who are fiercely religious. It is alleged that troops, disguised as workmen will •take part in the parade. • Calles Explains President Calles told labor delegates that at the moment when international questions, which were to .be decided “whether Mexico is or Is not a sovereign country." were occupying the state, the clergy acted ;*'in totally bad faith, stating that • they did not recognize the constitution, and ordering all fajthful to disobey and oppose the constitution. Police officials have bpen informed that many Catholic groups are meeting in private homes, and also allege that many Catholics 9re secreting arms in their houses. Editor Arrested Antonio Zuniga, editor and publisher of a minor Catholic bi-week-ly, El Farol, has been arrested, charged with inciting the public by his writings. The newspaper, El Sol, published an unconfirmed report that police plan to guard churches at night to prevent removal of valuables.

COOLIDGE'S HAT TOSSED IN RIND TOO SOON, FEAR Qhild’s Statement Causes * Concern Among Friends of President. By John Montgomery, United Press Staff Correspondent PAUL SMITH’S, N. Y., July 30. —The statement of Richard Washburn Child, formerly ambassador to Italy, v ho for the last three days has been the guest of President Coolidge, that many of his followers expeohim to be a candidate for a t-hird term already has become the occasion of concern among friends of the President, who feel that the statement was premature. While undoubtedly Child's view is correct, some of the President’s closest friends feel that the statement at this time was entirely too early and will do the President's prospects no good. This utterance of President Coolidge's guest, they argue, being in the nature of launching a third term fhoom for the President, is so far In advance of the campaign that Vs force will he completely lost'before the campaign gets under way. But more than that they fear that thus placing the President ih the position of bidding for another term will tend to lend political color to important executive acts between now and the convention. An indication of this reaction of
the President's friends came almost before Child's words had reached the telegraph wires. An important Republican leader and close friend of the President who stoppet here for lunch declined to follow Child's lead and discuss the 1028 campaign with newspaper correspondents on the ground that such a discussion was premature. / Gone, but Not Forgotten Automobiles reported stolen to police belong to: v Mrs. Jack Rutpedge, 114 E. SPECTER Os WAR STALKS AGAIN IN BALKAN NATIONS __________ • Anniversary of World Conflict Sees Jugo-Slav-Bul-garian Crisis. Bu United Pres* LONDON. July 30.—0n the twelfth anniversary of the battles which began the World War, the Balkans where the first shots in that conflict were fired, was upset today by intrigup and irreg/tlar battles which may at any time raise the specter of war in Europe. The latest of the irregular clashes occurred this week at Krivabalanka on the Jugo-Slav-Bulgarian frontier. Only the intervention of the League of Nations to date has prevented open hostilities between these small, restless countries. Diplomats fear that if such hostilities once got well started the major powers of Europe soon would be involved In another catastrophic struggle. Many Informed observers todlly believe that the league's influence is waning, principally because of the recent difficulties at Geneva and the failure to effectuate' the Locarno agreements for peace and security. If the Locarno commitments are not lived up to it is the opinion of many persons that the league would be unable to prevent the spread ol hostilities once they began in earnest. FARMERS FACE LOWER PRIDES Bankruptcy Feared for Tillers of the Soil. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, July 30.—Farmers are faced with anew pVlce depression of agriculture products that threatens to send many tillers of the soil into bankruptcy this year. The Agriculture Department made public today statistics showing that farm prices dropped 4 points to 135 per cent of the pre-war level between June 15 and July 15—a time of year when farmers depend on the sale of their commodities to carry them over the lean winter months. This rapid price decline did not strike business in general. While the farm prices have decreased *l4 points in the last year, non-agricul-ture commodities declined on 4 points in twelve months to 160 per cent of pre-war level. Meantime, the purchasing power of farm products has also steadily declined. The department placed the index of purchasing power for July at 87 and predicted that it would drop to 85 for July, the lowest point since December. 1914. Thus the farmer's dollar is worth 13 cents less than it, was before the war. CHURCH ISSUES 3ALL North Methodist Episcopal Asks De Pauw Man to' Become Pastor. The Rev.
