GIGANTIC LIQUOR RING SMASHED AT BUFFALO BY U. S. Charge Alcohol Made Into Whisky, Then Sent to Rum Row. Bii United Pres* . BUFFALO, N. Y., JuTy 30. Round-up of ninety persons at Niagara Falls Indicted for conspiracy to violate the prohibition law and smuggling, continued today. State troopers, Federal agents and border patrol were posted at roads and bridges radiating from Niagara Falls to head off any of the indicted who attempted to escape. Thirty-one prisoners have been brought in. v How denatured alcohol was withdrawn from warehouses, hidden for months to throw agents off the scent, purged by night, smuggled into Canada, converted into so-called whisky, and then sent to rum row for entry into this country as real overseas liquor was disclosed. The organization boasted its legal bureau, bribed notaries, a fleet of sea-going and river boats, its flotilla of automobiles and an extensive system of vats and cleaning appurtenances. It connived with petty railroad employes, planted spies in Federal circles and mapped its operating areas in true military manner. 1 Those arrested Included Arthur J. .Topp, president of the Jopp Drug Company, Buffalo, who the Government alleges is the arch conspirator of the gang. Other indictments name permit holders, notaries public, bootleggers, transporters. smOgglers and citizens of Buffalo, Toronto, fct. CatArines, New York City, and! others with headquarters in Halifax, N. S.

WOOLLEN TELLS FARMER’S PLIGHT Urges Solution at Once ‘Without Weasel Words/ Ten speeches in ten different towns in Hendricks County was the strenuous program Friday of Evans Woollen, candidate for the Senate on the Democratic ticket. Solution of the farm problem at once "without weasel words that delay while the life blood runs,” was Woollen’s recommendation in a speech at Plainfield. "The cruel wrong of the fanner’s situation is that while readjusting 'himself to the post-war reaction, his difficulties were increased by the Fordndy-McOumber tariff act,” Woollen said. "This law first increased the prices of the things he had to buy and second, decreased his farm markets. "How large a wrong was put upon the American farmer in raising the prices of the things he buys may be measures by the fact that the research department of the American Farm Bureau Federation has estimated tha.t the things bought in the first year of the Fordney-Mc-Cumber tariff act cost $1,715,000,000 more because of that act. Woollen, speaking at Roachdale Thursday night, told how the late ' enator Ralston had enlisted his interest in aiding the farmers to recover from their plight.
