Hu United Pre\a WASHINGTON, July 28.—Rum runners will be virtually nut out of business by the new anti-smuggling regulations arranged with great Britain by Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Andrews, it was predicted at Federal prohibition headquarters today. By the new methods, to be put effect immediately, the modern buccanneers may be wiped clear of the seas as were pirates in the olden days, one dry official said. States to qld In prosecuting ship owners and ship masters caught violating the law. Great Britain has agreed to stricter registration of merchant vessels. Vessels also must reveal to British custom officers the true nature of their cargoe. Officials said there is no law at present prohibiting a Britisn ship -from clearing a home port with a cargo of liquor for the United States, but American port authorities and the coast guard can be notified of destination and movement. The agreement probably will allow the dry navy to chase rum runners right into the Bahamas and Nassau. Heretofore the smugglers have used speedy craft and fled to foreign waters when pursued by < the Government patrol boats. Officials were highly gratified ■with the cooperation Great Britain is freely giving the United States in law enforcement, and said that the “hands-across-the-eea" system would work both ways, in that America ,will furnish England with information that will prevent smuggling into that country.
