- VERDICT GIVEN Negro Found Guilty Gets 2 to 21 Years. John Cooper, 28, Negro, 1234 N. Missouri St., was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury which rendered its verdict In Criminal Court today. Cooper was tried for the fatal shooting of Aaron "Cootie” Jordan, Negro, last January when he sought to collect some back room rent from Jordan. The jury was out about two hours later Tuesday. Cooper was sentenced to the Indiana State Reformatory for 2 to 21 years by Special Judge Frank A. Symmes. ( The case rested with the Jury Tuesday afternoon following reading of the instructions by Judge Symmes. Prosecutor William H. Remy in his closing argument declared Cooper sought Jordan with a loaded revolver, intent upon killing him. Cooper testified he fired three shots at Jordan, but asserted he acted in self-defense.
