Historian Says He Was Lover of Good Living, Quaffed Wine and Ate Heartily—Sacrilege, Declares Pastor.

Bu United Press CHICAGO, July 23.—A new religious controversy—this time centering around whether Jesus Christ was a "regular fellow" or a pious reformer —is raging between University of Chicago historians and Chicago Methodist ministers. The argument was started when Dr. J. S. Case, professor of early Christian history at the university, published an article in which he declared that Jesus and Ills followers "loVed good living" and were not averse,to quaffing wine and eating heartily "whenever they could." Dr. King Beach pastor of St. James Methodist Church, took up the Cudgel in a sermon at the Metho-dist-Episcopal camp meeting of (he Chicago area at Des I?laines, 111., by declaring that Jesus was not a back slapper or a good mixer, and that he didnt like hilarity. Dr. Case bases his statements on "Sound Historical Research” and Dr. Beach gets his from the Bible, "The Inspired Word of God." "We would regard Jesus as a great moralist, who has laid dcrwn for all times a body of instructions which contain the solution of every issue that would arise at all times,” Dr. Case says.

Dogansport officers were confronted with anew perplexity today in their efforts to enforce the - State bone-dry prohibition laws. They will ask an opinion as to whether a mattress soaked with liquor is evidence of violation of the law. As the raiders entered a home here the owner poured five gallons of liquor on the mattress.
