AMERICAN WOMEN TENNIS PLAYERS GET BACK HOME Stars of Racquet Arrive in New York With Wightman Cup, Emblematic of World’s Team Championship. v. By Henry L. Farrell Unitrrt Prrsi Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, July 14.—Bringing witn them the Wightman cup, symbolic of the world’s team championship, the American women’s tennis team retuned home today on the Majestic after a months’ invasion of France and England.

The party consisted of Miss Mary* K. Browne, captain; Miss Helen Wills, national champion; Miss Elizabeth Ryan and Mrs. Marion Zindersteln Jessup. They were met at the sler by a committee from the United TStates Lawn Tennis Association including Jones W. Mersereau, president; Julian S. Myrick, former president, and Edward B. Moss, executive secretary. “You all have done magnificently In the face of heavy odds and we are proud of you," Mersertcu said in presenting Miss Browne with a huge lioral wreath. Flowers for All The other members of the team were laden down with flowers sent to the pier by relatives and Trlends. The players were Invited to attend a testimonial dinner to be given tonight at the Vanderbilt hotel and to receive souvenirs, small silver replicas of the Wightman cup. The members of the 1923 team, which won the cup, also will be guests and will receive the same souvenirs. They are Miss Wills, Mrs. Mol la Mallory and Mrs. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman. “Considering the fact that the team was forced to struggle through the cup matches without Miss Wills in the face of the most formidable opposition, the victory the team scored was one of the brightest on the pages of American tennis," Mr. Mersereau said. A Game Fight The fight that Miss Browne made In reaching the final round In Paris and the glorious way In which she went down to defeat before Mile. Suzanne Lenglen In the final round writes a chapter that American tennis can well be proud of and furnishes a memory that spectators will not forget soOn. The strain that was forced upon the American players can be realized when It Is remembered that the championship toumamepts In England and France are not conducted as they are here. In Europe the singles, doubles and mixed doubles are played or. the same program, forcing the players, especially In the closing rounds, to play two or ifiore hard matches within the space of a few hours. The outcome of the singles championship at Paris and at Wimbledon certainly would have been In doubt if Miss Wills had been able to play her real game, but It is doubtful that she would have won from Mile. Lenglen or Mrs. Godfree In the weakened condition that brought upon her the attack of appendicitis.
