Brassie IRDIES By DICK MILLER rj HEM evening shadows fell Vy over the Scioto Country Club . at Columbus, Ohio, Thursday, where the National open golf tournament is being held, three Hoosiers of five qualified entries were among the select scorers. John (Jock) Colling, who spends his time daily leading the desfinies of the Kokomo Country Club players, chalked up a score of 72 for the first eighteen holes at Columbus. That score was only two above Robert Jones, British open champion, and one of the favorites to take the national meet. Jones shot 70, or two under par. Bill Melhorn, with a 68, had a lead of four on Jock as today’s play started. George Stark, pro at Coffin, and Wally Nelson, pro at Pleasant Run, shot golf Thursday that placed them in the “creditable game” class. They tallied 80s. ' It was mentioned in this column Tuesday that our two municipal court tutors were able to wield the irons and woods, and from all advance dope about Scioto and its rough, the score of 80 is not bad. McDonald Smith scored a 77, and Gene Sarazen, former title holder, a 78. A1 Watrous, runner-up to Jones ir the British open, also shot 80. Leonard Schmutte, Ft. Wayne Country Club pro, and Indianapolis citizen, scored an 82 at v Columbus Thursday. William H-utchinson, Elkhart pro, encounted the rough and was 88. * * • What might be classed the Indiant apolis Golf Trade Association made an auto caravan business trip today. Several members of- the Highland Golf and Country Club, where the western open tournament is to be played the last week in August, left today in autos to go to the national open at Coktmbus. Looking over the list taleing the trip one might infer that they were going to see the experts play the game they are so much interested in. but that is not it. Highland wants to dish out the best golf that is possible to the local public and that cannot be done without the best players here. So, the players at Columbus are going to receive some personal invitations. Today the caravan was to stop at Springfield, Ohio, where a team match was to be held with the Country Club team there. Arch Grosseman, Carl Wilde, W. G. Hoag, Dr. P. T. Hurt, G. T. O’Connor, Robert C. Elliott, Lyman, Whitaker, John Kennedy, /George Klein, William Umphrey, R. L. Reed. George Steinmetz, E. J. Wuensch. 1 C. L. Smith, A. F. Buchanan, John Ruckelshaus, Ted Byrne and Dick i Nelson, made the trip.
