MILLION-DOILAR RUM HAUL MADE Two Ships Seized by Boston Coast Guard. Bu United Press BOSTON. July B.— More than a million dollars' worth of liquor has been seized by coast guard and customs officials here during the post eighteen hours. The liquor wa6 discovered on two ships which were taken in an intensive drive by Federal authorities against a fast-gro\sing rum row. After she had run the Government blockade on liquor lane, the steamer Cretan, bought secretly by a Baltimore firm from the Merchants and Miners Transportation Company, was seized at Battery wharf here by Federal officials. They reported the discovery of a cargo of contraband liquor valued at $750,000, which make this the biggest seizure in* the history of the port t>f Boston. The captain find crew were arrested. Only a few hours later the coast guaixl reported the seizure of the British schooner Sumner off Cape Cod. This craft was reported to have a big cargo of contraband liquor.
RESIGNS FROM FORCE William Holtz Asks Retirement After Thirty-Two Years as Ollirer. Detective Sergeant William A. Holtz, appointed to the police department in 1894, today gave his resignation to Police Chief Claude F. Johnson,—asking retirement on a pension July 10. Holtz served in various capacities, from the rank of patrolman to detective captain and captain of the uniform branh. For years he was assigned as investigator for the board of childrens' guardians, later serving as a clerk. "In leaving I have only the regret that comes with separation of congenial and loyal associates who do contribute to one’s success," Holtz said.
