ALIEN PROPERTY PROBE LAUNCHED, HEADEDBYBORAH Alleged Mismanagement Is . Said to Have Netted 'Grafters’ Millions. Bv United Pres* WASHINGTON, July 6—lnvestigation of charges that alien property sized during the war has been used as a source of revenue for grafters, both in and out of official circles, will be launched today by the latest Senate inquiry committee, headed by Sentor Borah (Rep.), Idaho. The committee was to meet today to adopt a program for the investigation. ‘I have a general plan in mind which I shall submit to the committee,” Borah said. Borah has been gathering leads for the investigation ever since he sought to launch the probe six months ago.” Millions Netted Alleged mismanagement of the seized property and manipulations in connection with its administration are said to have netted millions to grafters. Former Attorney General Daugherty already, has become involved in the case through his indictment in New York in connection with one of the alleged alien property deals. Liberty bonds reported to have been traced to Daugherty, Col. Thomas W. Miller and John T. King, are alleged to have gone toward paying the “fee” for the decision that American metals stock seized during the war was Swiss-owned instead of German. “Several hundred thousand dollars” is reported to have changed hands in this case. Will Probe Fees The committee will go into the subject of attorneys' fees to ascertain why $3,000,000 was spent for legal assistance in administering the seized estates. Representative Garner (Dem.), Texas, has charged that treasury officials manipulated alien property funds held for investment and made “a million a year.” These charges also will be sifted. The committe will inquire into the sale of dye patents to the Chemical Foundation of Delaware, in which Francis Gardin, former alien property custodan, was interested. The sale of the Bosch Magneto Company also will be investigated. JAPANESE TEA TOKIO —Japan’s tea crop this year Is estimated at 30,000 tons, the great bulk of which will go to the United States. The movement across the Pacific has now started, somewhat late because of backward weather conditions.

Mr. Axtell told his assistants, when they put the turkey eggs in the incubator, that if every egg of the lot hatched he would give him 5 per cent of the young poults. "I’ll appreciate that,” replied his assistant, tbut I won’t know how many poudts to take. I don’t even know how many eggs we put in the incubator.” “Well, figure it out then,” Mr Axtell told him. “If we had put in two-thirds as many more eggs, and twice as many more, and eleven on top of that, there would be 220 eggs in the incubator, now.” How many eggs were put in the incubator Last puzzle answer:

RAISED S-51 IS TOWEDTO PORT Expect It to Be on Dry Dock by Wednesday. Bv United Press ABOARD U. S. S. FALCON, July 6.—Under lowering gray skies and through a cold sea, the salvaged submarine S-51, raised from the bottom of the Atlantic where it has lain for more than nine months, was being towed toward Brooklyn. Buoyed up by three salvage vessels to which she was lashed, the its convoy moved at only a three-knot per hour speed. It was expected that it would be placed in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy yard by Wednesday morning. Three acetylene torches will be used to burn open the steel hull of the vessel and recover the bodies of the crew, more than twenty men in all, who went down with the ship last September when it was rammed and sunk by the S. S. City of Rome. The body of Frederick Teschemacher, former local boy is thought to be in the hull. The submarine was raised at 3 p. m., yesterday, after officers in charge of salvage operations had conferred hastily on what should be done in the face of predictions of stormy weather and an already increasing ground swell. Cheers swept out over t-he water from the fleet of the salvage craft as the slimy hull of the submarine bobbed above the waves, .’ifted from the depths by the pul l , of inflated pontoons. MEXICAN GYROCOPTER MEXICO ClTY.—Manuel Carlos Reyes, a Mexican inventor, has developed a gyrocopter for airplanes which he claims will enable them to land vertically. He calls the device a “heliocoplano” and has left for San Antonio, where he will demonstrate the machine. It Is reported to differ from the La Cierva invention in Spain and not to conflict with La Cierva's patents. CITY GETS BACK TO WORK AFTER GLORIOUS FOURTH Week-End Celebrations and Picnics Held —Programs Presented. Following a week-end of Fourth of July celebrations, Indianapolis citizens today set about to clean up “dead” fireworks from their yards, become accustomed to regular meals after sessions of picniclng and generally get back to business. With Independence day falling on Sunday, the real celebration took place Monday, and throughout the day and evening the loud popping of firecrackers could be heard practically everywhere. It was one of the most glorious celebrations ever had, judged from the. standpoint of fireworks. Elaborate displays were presented at 'Riverside and Broad Ripple parks. Most places of business were closed. Four Indianapolis persons were drowned over the week-end. but there were no auto casualties. One child died after having eaten a “spit devil.” and many persons were slightly injured by fireworks. Firemen made a number of runs to places where small blazes had been started by •fireworks. • Highways Crowded Many city residents hit the trail to the outdoors and highways and trains, traction cars and busses were crowded. Persons from out-of-town also flocked into Indianapolis, At the Circle Theater, Monday morning, the city’s chief patriotic observance was held, with a large attendance. Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, Girl Reserves and Children of the American Revolution sang. Rain fell during the morning. ’ In parks over the city, programs were given and picnics held. While Dr. W. B. Caldwell, of Monticello, 111., a practicing physician for 47 years, knew that constipation was the curse of advancing age, he did not believe that a “purge” or “physic” every little while was necessary. To him. it seemed cruel that so many constipated old people had to be kept constantly “stirred up” and half sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts, calomel and nasty oils. In Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin lie discovered a laxative which helps to “regulate" the bowels of old folks Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin not only causes a gentle, easy bowel
DRIVE UPON CITY OFFICIAL HALTED Sewage Plant Superintendent Not Ousted, The drive of Russell T. Mac Fall, /nember of the board of sanitary commissioners, to oust Cecil K. Calvert as sewage disposal pla it superintendent was halted today by the failure of City Engineer George G. Schmidt to attend the board meeting. Schmidt has been sympathetic to the maneuver, and his vote in favor of a resolution to dismiss Calvert would have been a majority over the lone vote of Q. C. Ross, board president, who wishes to retain Calvert. McFall today scored Calvert for failure to place the $225,000 dehydration -plant in operation. Mac-Fall said the board late in 1924 adopted a resolution naming Arno Siesker as disposal plant head, but that Ross was able to bring about retention of Calvert, with Siesker relegated to mechanical superintendent.
