VACATIONISTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF STATE PARKS ■■ - > Conservation Department Expects Record Attend- - ance July 5. Wjth approach of the warm season, thousands of vacationists are shuttling back and forth along the prinicpal highways of the State and an apppreciable increase in attendance at the different State parks has been noted by the State conservation department. On the strength of early reports from the park superintendents, a record attendance was predicted by Richard Lieber, director of the conservation department. With the Fourth of July coming on Sunday this year, the following day has been set aside for the usual celebration, allowing a full two-day period for the observance. This arrangement, which seems to have been gen. erally agreed to by employers, will enable the pleasure seeker to enjoy a complete rest and outing at one or another of the six State parks in operation, Lieber pointed out. Varied Scenery In its string of six parks, Indiana has about everything to offer in the way of picturesque scenery. While no single park is lavish in its- share of scenery, each possesses something out of the ordinary, from trees four centuries old to rocky canyons cut hundreds of feet deep through walls of solid stone. McCormick’s Creek Canyon State Park, nearest to Indianapolis, lias unusual facilities for the entertainment of children, in addition to its natural scenic' beauties for the older folk In one of the deeper canyons a bathing pool has been constructed for the children and nearby is a fully equipped playground, operated under the direction of a trained supervisor. Haven for Wild Life McCormick’s is widely known as a haven for wild life, especially birds, and is rich in its assortment of growing plants and trees, making the reservation a rendezvous for naturalists. Only two hours’ motor ride from Indianapolis, McCormick’s probably will be heavily patronized over the Fourth. For a longer Fourth of July trip, there are such resorts as Turkey Run park, dirctly west of Indianapolis in Parke County, and Clifty Falls, near Madison. 4 Each can be reached in a five-hour drive at moderate speaefc" Turkey Run is noted for its deep gorges and heavy growth of virgin timbers, while Clifty is famed for its picturesque falls, its precipitous hills and its unparalleled panorama, which takes in the Ohio river and Kentucky’s hills beyond. Lake James State Park, with a two-mile frontage on the lake of the same name, is the baby of the State park system. Nevertheless, it will welcome a fair share of park patrons since it is the only one of the system boasting a lake. Limited hotel accommodations are afforded at Muscatatuck State Park, in Jennings County. Camping facilities, however, are unlimited. What Muscatatuck may lack in 'other accommodations, it makes up for in its meals, so declare those who take their stop-over meals there. All Indiana parke are located on or near State highways, qpost of them within three hours motor ride from Indianapolis, and are also accessible to steam and electric lines. The exceedingly low rates for hotel service prove attractive to persons wishing to take the family on an outing. Besause of the thinner clothing worn, thousands of watches go wrong wrong during the summer months. /
