BEN-BUR MEET OPENS Thirty-Eight States Represented at CrawfordsviKe Convention. Bu United Prr* CRAWFORDSVILLE. Ind., June 21. —Thirty-eight States were represented today at the fiftieth biennial convention of the fraternal order of the Supreme Tribe of Ben Hur. A class o( 100 received ritualistic work (luring the convention, which will be in session until Wednesday. HO CHILDREN SING AT SHRINE (Continued From Page 1) the air, were grouped the laity. Other thousands of men and women were grouped in the aisles and banked for blocks from the stadium. The commercial life of a great city was stilled as the services got under way. Hundreds filled the windows of the skyscrapers along Michigan Blvd. to watch the pageantry. The procession moved into the stadium at, 10 a. m., led by the white cassocked priests. They were followed by the higher church prelates who came in order of their rank, ending with the twelve cardinals—princes of the church. Crowd Handled Orderly The complete orderliness with which the crowds were handled, was marked. Police were itationed shoulder to shoulder at the various entrances, making aisles for entrance of the officials. Some delay was caused In the start by the right aisle, front entrance of the stadium, filling up. holding up the arrival of the clergy. As the cardinals entered, the notes of the organ burst upon the throng, falling with doubled and redoubled intensity as its huge bellows of sound stcept the crowd, amplified thousands of times by the loud speakers. One hundred thousand people were gathered on the streets and lanes leading Us the field. Another 100,300 were banked In the open place between the Field Museum and the stadium entrance. Three Square Miles Filled Police had difficulty in keeping the crowds from a 100-foot radio tower and mapy of the hardy scaled the heights of the tower for a vantage point from which to see the spectacle. The only open space within a territory of three square miles, was the narrow three-foot lane through which the prelates passed. Cheers greeted the various prelates as they were recognized by the crowd. S. G. Messmor of Milwaukee, dean of the archbishops, drew a great cheer from the crowd, as did Bishop Thomas Lillis of Kansas City. As Cardinal Bonzano mounted the altar steps, six Thebian trumpets in the chorus directors’ platform, heralded his approach.
Planes Whirr Overhead Airplanes whirled overhead as Cardinal Bonzano started the mass. Professor Kingenberger, dressed In white, raised his baton, and swelling from the throats of 62.000 children, in volume that reached far out on the blue waters of Lake Michigan and the busy life of Chicago came the “Kyrie Eleison,” "Lord, Have Mercy on Us”—the opening strain of the mass of the angels. A few drops of rain sprinkled the crowds as the choir Intoned the Gloria and umbrellas appeared throughout the stands. Children Well Trained The rain, however, was not sufficient to cause any discomfort, a few drops falling intermittently. The assembled thousands arose to their feet as the deacon of the mass sang the gospel. Months of training by the children was reflected in the fact that they sang the mass, including the long “Credo” and other difficult parts in Latin without having a word or note of music. Sun Breaks Through The clouds cleared and the sun broke through as Archbishop Michael J. Curley of Baltimore, began the sermon. He was easily henrd. The last blessing of the mass was given b.v Cardinal Bonzano at 1:30 as the thousands knelt. The procession from the field began with solemn dignity. The weather was In contrast to tfte ideal June day, which saw the opening ceremonies of the Congress. All of Sunday ceremonies, Including the Installation of Cardinal Bonzano ns papal legate for the Congress, were held Indoors, with the exception of an eclesiastieal procession of four blocks to Holy Name for the services. 50,000 Stand In Streets While only 2,000 could crowd into the cathedral, another 60,000 stood in the streets under the hot midday sun for five hours, listening to the music and sermons through the loud speaking arrangements. The keynote of the Congress, sounded by Cardinal Bonzano, hy a message from Pope Pius XI naming him as the papal legate, and hy Cardinal Mundelien, is to extend the Influence of the Eucharist by bringing still greater numbers within Its Influence. The speakers called for a reuniting of the “separated brethren," meaning the Eastern Catholic churches, and they urged extension of missionary work. HEADED BY CHARTRAND Several Thousand I-oral Catholics Attend Conference. Headed by Bishop Joseph F. Chartr&nd and the greater part at the local clergy, several thousands of Catholics In the Indianaoplls diocese today were In Chicago attending the eucharlstic conference. Two special trains and autos carried delegations to the conference Sunday. One train was made up of thirteen cars. Another special will leave Indianapolis Wednesday. Monsignnr Francis Gavisk, the Rev. Mortis O’Connor, St. Joan of Arc pastor; the Rev. Elmer J. Ritter, SS, Peter and Paul Cathedral rector, and the Rev. Bernard Sheridan, director of charities, were among those who participated in the oeramonlea.
