A number of other Indiana children have been graduated from the high school and vocational school. Founded by Davis Indiana has a further abiding interest •'in the school, since it was founded in 1913, by Secretary of Labor James J. Davis, who began his political career at Elwood in 1896, after singing in a political quartet through an exciting campaign. He had been at work there for more than two' years in a tin plate mill, and it was then that he thought out one of the cardinal points of the education now being given to all at Moseheart: handicraft is the basis of the best schooling. Marian W. Allen and his giant strawberries
One strawberry enough for a shortcake. That’s the kind that Marian W. Allen, 1399 E. FortySixth St. grows. And he has four and a half acres of them. This year they are larger than usual, according to Allen. The two berries shown above each measured two and threequarters inches across. Some of them measure more than three inches, Allen said. Allen gives credit for the size of the berries to Stephen Whitfield, his 65-year-old Negro gardener. Intensive cultivation —long hours with the hoe digging out the weeds — he says. playing in a band. Vocal and instrumental music runs through every activity in the school and any child here can learn to play any instrument at the same time that his or her voice is being cultivated. There are bands and orchestras, glee clubs and quartets and choruses. The children can be heard both singing and playing over the Mooseheart radio station, WJJD. Every Mooseheart child has also an experience with domestic animals and crops on the several big farms of many hundreds of acres, which can be traced back to Davis’s early ventures in money-making by raising chickens and potatoes just before he went to Indiana.
