June 7. 1926. BRAZIL LEAVES NATION’S LEAGUE (Continued From Page 1) that if this return is accomplished it will be done by payment of a heavy price to Spain. The inclusion of Tangiers in her Moroccan zone is one price Spain may demand, according to the Express. The possibility that the Madrid government may set about to form a closely knitted league of Spanish-speaking peoples is also discussed at some length. The Monroe Doctrine gives Brazil immunity against attack, this newspaper points out, and this fact alone makes it plain that the league is not essential tn Brazil. One most important consequence of Spanish and Brazilian withdrawal from the league would be the deprivation of that body of one-thirteenth of its income. it concludes. DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ROME (Copyright. 1826.) ROME, June 14.—The Vatican, for several years somewhat reserved toward the League of Nations, has so far increased its interest in recent months that It recently brought Influence to bear upon Brazil and Spain regarding the threatened withdrawals of these two outstanding Catholic nations from league membership. The Holy See was prompted to such action, first by its strong interest in maintenance of world peace, and second its desire to have as many Catholic nations as possible in the league as a guarantee for the protection of religious interests. First Noncommittal The somewhat noncommittal attitude with which the Vatican first greeted the League's entry as a factor in world politics resulted from an opinion that the new organization was not destined to be truly International, but rather to be a group which most represented inter-allied interests. Evidence of increased attention to league affairs on the part of the Vatican came when the Locarno treaties were signed and arrangements were made for admittance of Germany to the councils of the Geneva organization. Both of these facts were considered by the Catholic Church to be forerunners of a situation which would fit well Into its own plans looking toward world peace. Cautious Approach Difficulties at Geneva only served to increase Vatican interest. Efforts to influence the attitudes of Brazil and Spain were made cautiously and within bounds. It was made plain that membership in the league should not conflict with the dignity or superior interests of the two countries and that the best judges of such possible conflicts were the respective governments of the two countries. Brazil obviously deemed that such a condition fitted her case when she resigned last week from the league council and today resigned from the league. Spain, perhaps, was disposed to lend a more attentive ear. Thus far she has taken no definite action to sever her relations with the league.
ROCKEFELLER TO LIVE TO BE 11, SAYS HIS DOCTOR Pat and Mike Stories and Dieting Keep Oil King Healthy. Copi/riflht, 1936, A'fc'A Service CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 1L— John D. Rockefeller, modern Midas, whose hand has always turned all that it touched to gold, will live to be 100 years old. This is the decisive statement of his physician of nearly half a century, Dr. Hamilton Fisk Blggar of Cleveland, who has lived and played with Rockefeller for months at a time. And the attainment of a century of life by the world's richest man will be largely due to Pat and Mike, those two Irishmen who have contributed much to the joy of the world. It Keeps Him Young "Mr. Rockefeller loves Pat and Mike stories,” says the doctor, who is 87 himself, three months older than his famous friend and patient. "And it Is largely Ills keen sense of humor and his delight in good stories that keep him young.” The world's richest man, says Dr. Biggar, has learned the laws of long life as have few men. "And what he has done, any one can do.” says his physician. "It is merely a matter of common sense, living the simple life, physically and mentally and spiritually." Only enough food to maintain vitality—eating to live and not living to eat. / Daily setting up exercises and outdoor exercisj through golf or some other pastime. i Happiness ni family and home and friends. Religious belief and piety. A keen sense of humor. Eight or ten hours of sleep. A mind utterly free from worry. That's His Recipe These are the ingredients in the recipe, says the famed Dr. Biggar, which have brought John D. Rockefeller to the age of 87, will make him live to a happy 100, and can do the same thing for any person. “He is every doctor’s ideal pa-
Two of John D.’s Favorites It seems there was an Irishman whose name was Mike, and Mike went into a restaurant to order a meal. He’ had just been paid, and wanted a little of everything on the menu card. He ordered olives. When they came he nibbled one, put it hack on the plate, nibbled another, put it back, and stopped after trying the third or fourth. Another customer came in, sat down at Mike’s table and ordered olives, too. Mike looked at him curiously, then asked, "Do you like olives?” "Yes," said the stranger. “You’re a damn liar," said Mike. • • • It seems there was a race hi rse whose name was Enza. A man went to the race and bet heavily on Enza. But his heart sank lower and lower as Enza lagged behind. Then just at the very last moment influenza.
tient," says Dr. Biggar, "a man who keeps well rather than gets well. He is in better trim than I am. He advises the about my own health instead of my advising him. “John D. has a sweet tooth, but he would take poison as soon as candy. Aside from his liking of sweets, food means nothing to him. Eating is boredom. He/ hates luncheons, banquets, any, sort of feast for sociability. He feels that human beings should be able to get together with something more than a groaning table as the excuse." Fruit, vegetables, light meats, keep the world’s richest man young, he says. Rockefeller never drinks cold.water. Always lukewarm, even on the hottest days. Carefully Regulated He regulates his life to the day. The temperature of the day Is told him each morning and he plans his day accordingly. Seldom does he play more than eight holes of golf. His average score is 45 for the eight holes. Sometimes he plays the customary nine. He guards his health with eternal vigilance. If even slightly indisposed he stays in bed and rests. "Mr. Rockefeller really enjoys life," says Dr. Biggar. "He wants to live as many years as possible. That's why his health is so important to him.” John D. loves the old hymns, the old ballads. He hums "Swanee River." “Old Black Joe” and "Annie Laurie.” He reads and reads the 121st and 91st psalms. "But he is not merely an old machine looking after his body and forgetting other people." says Dr. Biggar. "I have traveled more than 200,000 miles with him: I have crossed the continent with him many times, and been abroad with him many times. t "He has never forgotten tny comfort at any time. I have never been a guest In his home, but what he came in to see if the windows were properly opened, if T had enough blankets, wanted anything." Started by a Game A game of blind man's bluff began the friendship between the doctor and his patient. John D. had been playing the game with his children. He ran into a sharp corner and cut his forehead. “I was called In, and he hegged me to fix it so that he would have no scar,” says Dr. Biggar. "That lob began our friendship. That was forty-six years ago." Again and again the old doctor stressed the repartee, the sparkling humor, the love of epigram in the world’s richest man. “I once saw him look at a cartoon of himself—a very bad one—and he laughed and said, ‘wouldn't that rock-a-feller?' “He loved to tell the story of the

days when a Cleveland boarding house keeper made him eat the leavings at second table, because the other boys complained of the odor of crude oil about him. lie sat on the porch until the others had eaten and left, then meekly went in and took what was left. "When he was attacked foi 'tainted money,’ he would laugh and say ’wouldn't some of them like some of that tainted money, though?' "Once John D. went to buy a car. When he asked the cost of l iainten ance, the salesman said, ‘lt depends on the price of gasoline.' Mr. Rockefeller said, ‘I guess 1 can afford It then.’" DRIVE AGAINST DIRECT PRIMARY 10 FOLLOW QUIZ Old Convention System Is Favored in View of Penn State Spending. Time * Wathinfjton Bureau, 13&Z .Veto I’orfc Avenue WASHINGTON, June 12.—A drlvt against the direct primary system of electing United States Senators may be one of the results of the disclosure by a Senate committee that more than $1,500,000 was spent In the recent primaries in I’ennsylvania. Expenditures accounted for totaled $1,422,635.80 when the inquiry was resumed this morning. All returns are not in, however, and the final score is expected to be well In ad vance of a million and a half. Other Spending And the figures being admitted he fore the Senate do not account for tens of thousands of dollars expend! tures for which no record was kept Ever since the Newberry affair Republican leaders have been privately assailing the direct primary system and advocating a return to the convention method of nominating candidates for the Senate. They have contended that in this day and age it costs too mpeh to conduct a vigorous campaign. Reed Launches Attack Senator David Reed of Pennsylvania makes the first direct attack on the system. Justifying the large Pennsylvania expenditures at th* meeting of the Republican* State committee In Philadelphia Saturday, Reed asserted the huge costs were forced by the "silly mechanism of primary laws.” Reed told Republic ans that “we have got to get back to the convention system.” Strengthening of the election laws, both for primaries and general elec tions, is sure to be the result of the probe.
