1 GRADUATES - HEAR DR. LITTLE AT BLOOMINGTON Commencement Address Is Given by President of Michigan University. Hu United Prefix BLOOMfNGTON, Ind., June B. Two great developments have taken place in university education in the United States in the past ten or fifteen years, Dr. Clarenee C. Little, president of the University of Michigan. told 900 graduates of Indiana University here, at the annual commencement exercises today. ‘‘First has come a marked increase in the quality of public spirited vision on the part of the State governments toward the State supported institutions of higher learning,” Dr. Little said. Larger Appropriations ' “This has shown itself in larger appropriations for maintenance and in the provision of funds for buildings. It is one of the annual celebrations of an example of the vision of a State in this respect that brings us together at this time. “The wisdom and foresight of who have made possible a greater Indiana University will stand the test of the years and will provide the background against which faculty and students if they possess imagination to glimpse the vision, will paint a magnificent living *vis“Second, there has come, following the war, a great influx of students. The fact of such an increase is established. The motives and results will again be referred to. “The point at 'issue, however, is - t'he existence of clear and indisputable evidence that State universities today have at hand the equipment and material to set a better standard of higher education that will be self perpetuating and self improving.” Outlines Ideals lir. Little outlined the various phases of the college ideals and accomplishments and related some of the problems confronting the student during his college career. He spoke of the need of democracy in education and told how democracy in education —as in all its otner phases—involves assumption of obligation as well as recognition of opportunity. Dr. Little was introduced by Governor Jackson who presided at the exercises. Degrees were conferred on approximately nine hundred graduates of the'diversity following Dr. Little's address.
