267,617 NOW IN HOSPITALS FOR MENTALLY SICK Census Bureaif Shows Big Increase in Number of Federal Patients. Times Washington Bureau. ISH Aetc l'orfc Avenue WASHINGTON, Juno 7. —There are 267,617 patients in United States’ insane hospitals and Institutions for j the mentally diseased, the census bureau has reported. The number has increased from 40,942 in such Institutions in 1880, j the report said, or an increase of ! 553 per cent. For the eighty-two j persons in such hospitals in 1880 for each 100,000 persons, there are now--245 persons—a direct increase, dis- ! regarding the increase in general | population, of more than 300 per cent. Increased Use Much of the increase musj be a#- j trihuted to the more general use of j ho pital care for the mentally ill, the j report said, and it cannot be viewed I entirely as indicating an increase in insanity. • “The summary shows there was a striking increase between 1904 and 1923, each census year,” tl>e report added. “There were 187,791 persons in hospitals in 1910, or 204 per 100,000 population, against 245 per 100,000 in 1923." The report is the result of the cen- i stis of mental hospitals taken In ! 1920. The foreign born have many j more people In insan/ hospitals than their general proportionate num- j bers —69,984, or 28.6 per cent, it was said. The proportion of foreign bora in j the general proportion at the same I time w r as only 14.1 per cent, show- I ing that their numbers in insane hos- ' pitals run twice their number in the j general population. Germany, Ire- ! land and Austria furnish the largest \ number. Half Unmarried Another feature was that 54.1 per cent of 111 patients were unmarried. The chance of Insanity increases with age, the report shows, the largest number of patients being more than 35 years old. The number of patients in mental institutions in Certain States by the census follows: Pennsylvania, 20,040; Ohio, 12,766; Indi- | ana, 6,433; Maryland, 4,542; District of Columbia, 3,761; Kentucky, 4,514; Tennessee, 3,116; Oklahoma, 2,780; Texas, 6,276; Colorado, 2,165; New Mexico, 372; California, 11,485 u goingTafter students Indiana Central Has Enrollment of 500 as GoaL High-powered sales methods are being undertaken by students, of Indiana Central College In an effort to raise the enrollment of that institution. Two squads of students will travel over Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin this week, visited United Brethren gatehring3 and talking to prospec- j tive students.
