A Little Matter of $335,000 “ # London Man Wins Fortune on Sweepstakes Ticket Sells Half Interest.
Dv Times Soccinl LONDON, June 3. —“Too busy—too much work to do to discuss the matter.* Thus Robert Bishop, 50-year-old head of the policy department of Messrs. Hartley, Cooper & Cos., London insurance broers, described his feeling-3 when he heard he held the winning ticket in the Calcutta Sweepstakes on the Epsom Derby, and had won a fortune of $335,000. But Miss Alexa Farr, who drew the ticket that won second money in the Stock Exchange “sweep,” was overcome and required a cup strong tea with her mother before she was quite herself again. Bishop had sold half of his ticket, which was on Coronach, the winner of the Derby, for $35,000. His winnings, therefore, are $335,000. Miss Farr gave a bait- share in hers to her mother. They won $150,000. Cyril G. Stileman, manager of the Bombay branch of Sir Alexander Gibbs and partners, drew the ticke 1 in the Calcutta sweepstakes on Colorado, the favorite, which finished, third. He sold his share for SIOO,OOO and an additional $75,000, or more than he would have won had he retained the whole ticket. The names of the holders of the tickets on Lance Gaye, which finished second in Calcutta “sweep,” and on Coronach in Stock Exchange •“sweep,” still were unknown on Wednesday night. There was a possibility that the tickets, each worth a fortune, had been lost. TfT&moncl li%utes ■elided In determining ihe height of a batter's shoulder in order to properly judge a pitcher's delivery, does the umpire pay attention to the batsman who crouches in reaching liis decision? ** * . Ts a batter purposely crouches, particularly in a pinch, in an effort to throw the umpire and pitcher off. the official calling halls and strikes rules ball or strike according to where lie judges his shoulder would have been had he taken his normal position. On the other hand, batters who have a natural crouch in facing the pitcher and always hit from such a position, are given the same consideration as the batter who assumes a straight-up posture. Joe Harris, hard-hitting utility man of the Washington club, has a crouch style at the plate; so did Harry Hooper, former White Sox star. Til calling balls and strikes on. such batters the umpire takes their shoulder line from the crouch stance. But the batter who does it to confuse is given no con r side ration.

Boosts Candidate at Convention
Elizabeth Gray
in political party convention campaigning was introduced at the Claypool today by Elizabeth Gray, 13, of Covington, who was busy as a bee for David S. Ferguson, candidate for the State auditorship nomination. “He just lives a block from me and he's a fine man,” Elizabeth informed the delegates. Ferguson came to Indianapolis front New York, an orphan “bound boy,”—bound out for his “board and keep” at a tender age. He was bound out to a Fountain County farmer. Now he is 70, owns 3,000 acres of land, and is reputed to have amassed a fortune of three-quarters of a million dollars. He is a widower.
STREET CAR MEN TAKE UNION OATH (Continued From Page 1) an arbitrator between the street railway company and the association. Armstrong and Parker were unable to speak at the meeting because of a restraining order granted by Federal Judge Robert C. Baltzell, late Wednesday on petition of railway company officials, which prohibited them fiom taking further action to unionize the men and calling a general walk-out of employes. Officers of the Federal Court said that unless a date is set for a hearing on the injunction to follow the restraining order, it will automatically come before the court in ten days. All street cars, carried a placard copy of the restraining order. Speakers were ,Baker: J. C. Shannessy, general president of the International Journeymen Barbers’ Union, and Jeff Davis, Cincinnati, “King of the Hoboes.” Armstrong and Parker attended and Armstrong gave the oath of the association to the men present. At the close of the session those present were told all business will be handled by the national officers and that another meeting will be called soon. Officials asked those who took the association oath to start immediately to sign up others. Police on Guard When the crowd left the hall, nine rrfotorcycle policemen, eight mounted officers and several patrolmen were on hand to see the crowd performed in an orderly fashion. During the meeting persons were warned to conduct themselves properly when leaving the hall, because a “t%> from the cops” had informed them that a guard would be downstairs. Baker characterized the street railway company as the “power behind the scenes” that controls the city administration. In a reference to the frequent arrests of Parker and Armstrong since they have been organizing employes here, he said he “knew little about Germany, little about Italy and little about Russia, but he knew that nothing done in those countries was as dastardly as certain acts in Indianapolis recently of the administrative powers.” Charges Corruption “The street railway company has been one of the greatest corrupting influences in Indianapolis,” he declared. “The company’s corrupt use of money—and they can listen to this and take me to task if they want to—by the corrupt use of money they have tontrolled and sought to control the officials of the county and city. “They have given money to both political parties. They did not give a single dollar but what they expected to get back dollar for dollar when they wanted service.” “They expect politicians to act just like John Duvall has acted in the last four or five days. They expect them to act like the chief of police has acted.” BOY ROUTS BEES GRASS RANGE, Mont.—A small boy, with a firecracker left over from last Fourth of July, is the hero of this town. The boy and the cracker routed a swarm of bees that had taken headquarters under a board walk on one of the main streets.
