CULLOP’S STAND ON TARIFF TOPIC OFOEMOCRATS Possibility Seen for Primary • Modification Plank in Platform. [jal Whether hackers of William A. Cullop of Vincennes will be able to turn the Indiana Democratic party back to Its time-honore<A conception of the tariff from which leaders have shown a tendency to depart probably will determine who will be Democratic long-term senatorial nominee, polticians said today. The State convention, which Will decide the Issue, will be attended by 1,318 delegates, who will assemble at Tomlinson Hall, Thursday. ( Qullop, a former congressman, la 73 years old and represents th' nth degree of low-tariff thought in the party. Cullop h, J,ead Through an energetic campaign, Cullop led the five other candidates, but the margin was small* lie contends the State convention ehould follow precedent established when It twice nominated Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch for Governor after Me* Cul’och had led in the primaries of 1920 and 1924. John E. Fredrick. Kokomo manufacturer, apparently leads the elements who contend the party must satisfy in a measure the business men who demand tariff protection If it hopes to win an election. Although Thomas Taggart has not officially indorsed his candidacy, It Is believed the address of Evans Woollen, short-term senatorial nominee, before Democratic editors recently at Martinsville, indicates the former Senator’s sympathy with the chango of front on tbe tariff proposed by Fred rick s Both Woollen and Fredrick are virtually supporting what was formerly considered a Republican protective tariff, but declare they favor gradual reduction. No Talk of Olliers There Is little talk now that the convention will select anyone other than the six candidates wno were In the primary race. Friends of Albert Stump, Indianapolis attorney, say he demonstrated considerable strength by running second in the primary without organization support, and contend his oratorical ability would be an asset to the-party. Although L. Ert Slack, Indianapolis attorney, expended little effort In campaigning, he scored a large primary vote, according to his supporters. Slack, they say, has a brilliant party record. George W. Rauch. Marion attorney, campaigned in only three counties during the primary contest. A letter from Ills campaign headquarters declares he made little effort in the primary because he was certain the final appeal would be to the delegates In the State convention. Modification of the Volstead Act is the chief plank in the platform of L. William Curry, Indianapolis lawyer, a candidate. Wet Plank Effort Leaders believe there are sure to he attempts to Insert a wet plank in the State platform, but say It will be rejected. The) platform. tHe “modernists" hope, will lie modified in conformity with the new school of tariff thought In the party. With the announcement that L. O. Elllngham of the platform advisory committee, will prepare a primary modification plank, it was thought there is possibility the Democrats will adopt a plank similar to that of the Republican State convention. The race for the vnrloui State offices is attracting little Interest with only a 'few candidate* mentioned as likely to enter. Zachariah T. Dungan will run for renomination as State Supreme Court clerk. Christian J. Indianapolis, also is a candidate. Orville Sampson, Morristown, for secretary of State; David Ferguson, Covington, for auditor; Jap Jones, Martinsville, for treasurer, and Daniel Llrjk. Auburn, and Charles Renister, Indlannpolis, for Judges of Appellate Court, are possibilities, according to the politicians. -

BUSERGIVESHIS SIDE OF QUESTION Controller Says He Was Left $210,000 in Debts. Taking: issue with former Mayor Lew Shank, who said recently that his administration turned over $187,000 in the general fund to ths Duvall administration, William O. Euser, city controller, today gave his version of the financial turnover. "When T took over the duties of city controller, Jan. 4, the nctuat cash balance on hand was $5,348.16," Buser's statement declared. "I found old bills, still unpaid, amounting to approximately $210,000. As the 1926 budget will more than likely show a deficit of approximately SBO,OOO for the 1926 central fund, it was Impossible to pny these old bills In any otl er way than having a bond issue. Therefore, I sold bonds totaling $210,000 to pay these old debts. Instead of having $187,000 balance, we had $5,348.16 balance and approximately $210,009 in unpaid bills." BIG MOTOR TAX INI OMR Pennsylvania received $30,279,770 for motor taxes last year, leading all other States In the Union. The amount came from fees, drivers' licenses and gasoline taxes. TAXI RATIO MAY ADVANCE Taxicab companies throughout the United States and Canada are said to he considering a rate increase. Many companies report unprofitable operation on the present rate basis.
