COUNTY ABANDONS , BUYING CHURCHES Tm Through With It,’ Says Cassius Hogle. “I’m through with the thing,” bemoaned Cassius L. Hogle, county commissioner, today when asked if the commissioners might reconsider the matter of purchasing th£ First Baptist and Second Presbyterian Churches, which are located in tfce World War Memorial Plaza. Hogle insisted that the county commissioners would not present to the county council an ordinance asking an. appropriation for the purchase of the structures. “I’ve said all along as far as I’m concerned, it’s a closed incident,” Hogle said. “I think everybody knows my position in the matter by this time,” he said. Both Hogle and Charles O. Sutton, president of the board, have refused to purchase the churches because of the tax burden. The congregations of the Second Presbyterian Church expressed a willingness to sell their property, if the county will act soon. If not, the church members propose to build an addition to the chiurch with a

The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has tested, and found practical, a policy that may seem visionary to people who think of any business organization as a machine. Thi3 policy is the application of the Golden Role oa the large scale of big business. It is manifested outwardly, in die evertocreastag service, of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) to the thirty million people of the Middle West, and inwardly, in the helpful attitude of the management towards the employes of the Company. Concrete illustrations of the internal application of the Golden Rule are the Employes Stock Purchasing Plana. The first was formulated five years ago and met such enthusiastic response that a second Employes Stock Purchasing Plan is now otiered to all members of the organization. By means of the first plan (which provided that for each SI.OO subscribed by the employes the Company would contribute 50 cents) the employes made themselves one of the largest sTockhokfigg influences in the Company. The results of the first plan are fewreacMng, It has enabled the employe to become a partner in the bosh ness, and he has given to his work keener interest and greater effort, knowing that be will partidpateinevery saving he effects. Asa result of this policy, the Standard CUT Company (Indiana) is remarkable for the compactness and harmony of its working force. And ultimately the general public benefits from the increased efficiency. This one illustration is a concrete proof that the Golden Rule in business is practical. Theoretically, also, it appears to be a sound business principle. The individual who forgets Ms profit in the joy of doing his particular work well, usually enjoys the largest compensation; so in big business the organization that considers the service of the community first makes greater profits in the end. Such a logical explanation of the practical working of the Golden Rule in business subtracts perhaps from the glory of its unselfishness, but it/ evidences the plausibility of its everyday application in the world of big business. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) carries the Golden Rule policy further, in its Industrial Relation Plan and in its Annuity Plan, which emphasizes the conviction of the management, that the Golden Rule is a practical business maxim, in harmony with economic laws —and that its benefits accrue directly, to the consuming public in superior quality, low prices and maximum service.
