CHINESE FANTASY MARKS ATHLETIC CLUB’S RECITAL Dance Affair Given at Athenaeum —Athletic Director in Charge. An exotic Chinese fantasy, “The Feast of the Lanterns,” was the outstanding number of the dance recital given by the Hoosier Athletic Club Wednesday night at the Athenaeum, Under the supervision of George W. Llpps, club athletic director. The scene of the play was an old Chinese garden during the annual celebration of the moon. The stage was illuminated with vari-colored lanterns and mandarins and dancers gathered to celebrate the religious rite. The theme of the dance centered around a Chinese maid and her lover who quarreled, were reconciled and married during the progress of the fete. Ruth O’Neal BeleW was the maiden, Li Yu. Charles M. Rick took the part of Loo-Pan, the lover, and Ernest Senkewitz was the father, Ching Lo. The first number on the program was entitled a “Lake Shore Pastime” and was a children’s pastime, portraying the modern trend of sports and amusements at a lake shore hotel. A dance number, “A Little Bit of Jazz,” was given by Helene Eder, and “Valse Fantasy,” a toe dance, was given by Miss Martha Jane Shearer. The remainder of the large cast was made up of Hoosier Athletic Club pupils of Lipps. The final number on the program was the “Moscow Fair.” Miss Belew and George Lipps executed an Adagic that was perhaps the crowning bit of the evening. Miss Marie Schulmeyer, pianist, Miss Maude Custer, violinist and Miss Ann Cunningham, celloist. played. FAT PEOPLE SHOULD CHEW SILPH IT’S HARMLESS!
MILLIONS of Americans chew gum, most of them simply because they enjoy doingit, though r considerable proportion have discovered that the stimulated flow of saliva aids digestion. It is well known to many that chewing gum provides the best possible means of administering certain ingredients, gradually and in a manner which insures their thorough assimilation without burdening the system. The most remarkable discovery, however, in regard to chewing gum as the perfect means of administering for specific purposes, undoubtedly is the preparation known as “SILPH.” This is a delicious, refreshing chewing gum which from many letters received, takes off fat in a most, pleasant way without any discomfort or ill effects. The reducing elements in "SILPH” are provided by a special formula including the extracts of certain sea plants and herbs. Not until the perfecting of "SILPH," however, was the ideal manner of administering them provided. "SILPH” is supplied by the Silph Cos., 9 W. 60th St., N. Y. C., and is sold with a guarantee by all up-to-date drug or dept, stores —One should beware of inferior imitations and ask for the green box, 50c, one size only. sate At An? of Hook s, THWi s o# Goldsmith Br6s. CONFESSIONS OF A FAT WOMAN __ NO. 16
By Idah MfGlone Gibson. Right here I am going to stop talking of fat or forms and confess a little about what this fat reduction did to me mentally. As the people who read this probably know, I have always earned my living by newspaper and magazine writing. As I grew steadily fatter I found more and more a disinclination to keep up my usual hours of work. I also grew rheumatic and it was hard for me to walk. This, of course, made me practically stop all exercise. I know now I was just living to eat, for the moment I stopped accepting invitations among my friends because of my lameness, the more I depended upon luxurious food for my only pleasure. I let my friends tell me how well I was looking when I appeared among them, and even when I looked in the glass I would not see that I was getting to be very ugly. Say what you please, nothfng affects a, woman's mind and spirit like knowing she looks well and really nothing spoils her complexion as does the knowledge that she is growing old and fat. No one loves a fat woman any more than they love a fat man, and there is no cosmetic in

the world that is as efficacious as loving and knowing that someone loves you. So it behooves you to make yourself Interesting to someone. Whether you are 16 or 80 you must march with your regiment. When all the world is talking about slender women—for slender women mean clever women—you are falling by the wayside unnoticed if you are too fat to keep up with the other marchers. Personally, after a woman is 30, I do not like her to have "a boyish figure,” for that means that she is under-nourished or over-nervous. I hear some women say: “Up to date, Mrs. Gibson, you have been talking of eating too much food. You have said that it is a. good thing to be hungry, and now you have turned about face and talk of under-nourish-ment.” You must remember, dear critics, that a woman can live on her own fat for a long time. After that, by judicious experiments, she can find out just how much food will keep her at the weight she desires and eat only that much. NEXT:. .The Value of Exercise In Reducing.
