VARIED SCENIC ATTRACTIONS IN WESTERN STATE Colorado Offers Excellent Accommodations to Summer Tourist. Diversified scenic attractions, pleasant pastimes, good roads and excellent accommodations constitute Colorado’s appeal to summer tourists. Expansive prairie wastes fringe the towering Colorado Rockies. Hidden in those mountains are the beauties of gorgeous canons, picturesque pine forests, running streams, quiet lakes and cool breezes from snow-capped peaks. In the north of Colorado lies the Rocky Mountain National Park with all its natural beauties. South of this is the Arapahoe glacier, a frigid mass of solid ice throughout the entire year. Denver, the capital city, has many attractions for tourists in and near its district. It is the centra! point of numerous one and two-day motor tours. Near the Colorado Springs district are the world-famous Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods. Here nature has played many fanciful pranks, forming such oddities as the Cave of the Winds, the Seven Falls, the Balanced Rock and many other amusing and interesting red-stone images. Royal Gorge The route from Colorado Springs to Canon City, which bears the harrowing name of Dead Man's Canon, leads the motorist to the land of the Royal Gorge and Sky-line Drive. iTie Royal Gorge, that mammoth jkreak in the earth's surface where Vertical walls of solid rock edge the ihvirling Arkansas River, is one of 4he most colorful and stupendous formations in the Colorado Rockies. Pueblo, the gateway to the San Isabel National Forest, is the logical starting place for many interesting and enjoyable tours in the Colorado Rockies. The San Isabel National Forest remains unique for the quick-changing scenes of natural beauties which it presents to visiting motorists. Here one finds deserts as arid as the Sahara with sand dunes that are constantly. shifting their positions with the change in time, forests rich in nature's plumage and rugged mountain vistas. Tucked away in the southwest corner of Colorado is the Mesa Verde National Park. This park is particularly noted for the ruins of the prehistoric cliff dwellers homes which ftre found here. The cliff dwellers Were an agricultural tribe of Indians who lived by farming rather than hunting, and because of their settled life built themselves durable, permanent homes in the mountain cliffs. Hiking, mountain climbing, swimming and making camp under a clump of pine trees in the shadow of a towering mountain are seductive recreations that are nature's way of playing host. Excellent, well-marked roads throughout the entire mountain district make touring pleasant. Convenient accommodations for campers and frequent service stations provide the motorist with all necessities. The roads to Colorado from other states are all in good condition. Motorists from the east will find the National Old Traails and the Victory Highway paved from New York'to St. Louis. The Victory is paved and graveled or hard surfaced for the entire distance between Stt. Louis and Kansas City. The roads from Kansas City into Colorado are paved, graveled or otherwise improved, their condition depending to a great extent upon the weather. . From Chicago and cities nearby, either the Lincoln or the Detroil-Lineoln-Denver Highways can be taken. Both are paved for half the distance between Chicago and Omaha. From Omaha the roads are improved and well maintained. Good Roads •From the southeast, the Dixie Overland Highway can be taken from Savannah to Dallas, Tex., or the Dixie Highway from Atlanta to St. Louis and then the rest of the way over any of the other routes. From Oklahoma City, and points near there, motorists can go north to Wichita and proceed to Denver by way of the Denver-Joplin Highway or the National Old Trails route. From the west motorists can choose between the National Old Trails and the Pikes Peak Ocean-to-Ocean Highways from Los Angeles or the Victory, Midland or Lincoln Highways from San Francisco. All of these roadfs are well maintained and offer pleasant routes into Colorado. From southern Arizona the motorist can enter ColoriMo by the northern route on the National Old Trails or he can leave the trail at Gallup and go to Colorado on the National

• The most beautiful scenery in the world is in Jefferson County, surrounding Madison, Ind. From Portland the motorists may take the Old Oregon Trail to Denver or leave it at Pocatello, continue in to Salt Lake City and take either the Lincoln, Victory, Midland or Pikes Peak Ocean-to-Ocean Highways. MUM GOOD ‘APPETIZER’ Mecca for Nature Lover —Near Spencer. Asa sort of appetizer for the va- ' cationist, McCormick’s Creek Canyon State Bark, near Spencer, serves an admirable part in the Hoosier park scheme. This reservation, consisting of 350 acres of typical Owen County land, lies three miles east of Spencer on the State road between that city and Bloomington. In recent years it Ims gained recognition as a delightful stop-over for tourists crossing the southern part of the State. Because of its comparatively large canyons and cliffs and its heavily-wooded hills bearing every form of wild life known to the State, it has developed into something of a mecca far the nature lover. McCormick’s Park came into possession of the State in 1916. The land was the property of the late Dr. F. S. Denklewater, who operated a sanitarium there for years. The sanitarium now serves as a hotel for the tourists. TK? park is particularly attractive to children because of its gigantic swimming pool within one of the canyons. Indianapolis vacationists are attracted to McCormick’s because it is the nearest to Indianapolis of all the State recreation centers. INDIANA SECURES PARK AS RESULT OF GENEROSITY Area FiftyEight Acres —Once Site of Historic Mill. Through the generosity of Jennings County citizens the Siate •ame into possesion of fifty-eight acres of land between North Vernon and Vernon, known as Muscatatuck State Park. At one time the park was the site of a historic mill, where the water power was used in cutting stone. Today Muscatatuck is one of the most popular tourist stopovers in Indiana. Hotel accommodations are somewhat limited, hut camping facilities are good. Excellent homecooked nv>als are serced on the reservtion, accounting in a measure for the wide acclaim this small resort has'gained for itself. Muscatatuck is a heavily vooded tract and its rustic scenery and primitive beauty favorably compare with Indiana’s best. It is easily reached by the Pennsylvania, B. & O. and New York Central Railroads. The topography of the park is broken and in parts there are deep ravines and verdant clad hills. While its canyons possibly arc not so precipitous and do reach the marvelous depths found in the great depressions at Turkey Run and McCormick's Canyon State parks, this little reservation. Us northern point coming up to an excellent State road. No. 26 is a restful retreat from the city's torrid heat. The Muscatatuck River along one border of the park provides abundant facilities for "bathing, and is heralded as one of the l>est fishing streams in southern Indiana. The park Is in the path of a great volume of automotive travel from Ohio across Indiana to Kentucky.
