XEA Service CHAMPAIGN. 111.. May 27. Extensive experiments in highway construction and maintenance are being conducted by the department of civil engineering of the University of Illinois. The experiments are being conducted on three pieces of road, each one mile long. Each piece of road is divided into eight parts and on these different road machines are being used in an attempt to get a comparison between motor and horsedrawn equipment. FAVOR SUPER-CHARGERS “Steady progress has been made in the application of super-chargers of various designs to racing cars and it will not be long until simila?’ devices are adopted as standard equipment on passenger automobiles,” sys C. W. Iseler, research engineer. *- GAS TAX COSTS $9.22 The Bureau of Public Roads estimates that automobile drivers last year paid an average of $9.22 apiece in gasoline taxes. The average gasoline consumption per vehicle was about 439 gallons. U. S. A. MOTOR NATION Eighty-one per cent of the world's motor vehicles are owned in the United States. Not only is America supplying itself with automobiles, but it furnished foreign countries 636,741 vehicles in 1925. ROADS CUT MOTOR COST Research work conducted by the Pennsylvania highway commission shows that the cost of operation for all types of motor vehicles over hard-surfaced roads is 25 per cent less than over dirt roads and 15 per cent less than over grave! roads. The Custer Battlefield Hiway is listed as one of the six best marked highways in the United States.
