POLL IN SENATE SNOWS NO HOPE FORREFERENOUM Only Sixteen Favor It and They Demand Impossible Reservations. Cdoiirinht. U)2C,. bu United Pres* WASHINGTON, May 27.—The Senate is overwhelmingly opposed to a national prohibition referendum, according to a poll taken this week. Os seventy Senators interviewed, only -sixteen favored a referendum and some of the latter had almost impossible reservations. The poll showed that Senators from the wet States of New York, Maryland and New Jersey heartily favored the referendum. Senators from “half-way” States were uncertain and those from the dry South and West generally opposed the plan. A few comparatively dry States expressed the belief that “fair referendum might be well to quiet the present wet outburst. They argued that the country would vote dry. The majority of Senators branded arguments for a referendum as “wet hysteria" and “a lot of talk.” Plan to Amuse “It is a plan to amuse the voters tmtil after elections,” commented Senator Borah (Rep.), Idaho. Senator Cummins, Republican, lowa, and Swanson, Virginia, Democrat. said they “had not considered the plan;” Goff, West' Virginia, .auithcr .of the dry bill, said, “I will study it," and Senator Da Follette, Republican, Wisconsin, remarked “I have nothing to say.” “No one in my State has urged me to support a referendum,” said Senator Watson, Indiana. Others who declined to comment were Senator Deneen, Republican, Illinois; McNary, Oregon, Republican; Moses, Republican. New Hampshire; Oddie. Republican, Nevada; Shortridge, Republican, California: Stanfield, Republican, Oregon; Means, Republican, Colorado, and Ransdell, Democrat, Louisiana. California plums and apricots, at SO cents a pound, were seen on city market stands today for the first time this season. One stand-holder received a shipment of large eggplants, selling at 35 to 40 cents each. Strawberries were higher, at 25 to 35 cents a quart. Other prices included: California cherries, 50 and 60 cents a pound; California tomatoes. 35 cents a poufid; hot house tomatoes, 60 cents a pound; cucumbers, 5 cents each: green beans, 15 and 20 cents -i pound; wax beans, 25 cents a pound; California peas. 25 cents a pound; Tennessee peas, 20 cents a pound, and early June peas, 5 and 10 cents a pound. Sugar corn sold at 10 cents an ear; red raspberries, 35 cents, a box, cantaloupes, 15 to 20 cents each; head lettuce, 10 to 20 cents each; celery, 10 to 15 cents a stalk; Michigan potatoes, 90 cents a peck; Idaho potatoes, 95 cents a peck, and red Texas potatoes, 10 cents a pound.

Piersool, research physicist, which will not lose its reflective efficiency when exposed to temperature change or weather conditions. The reflectors are electro-plated with ehormium. The development is the result of two years’ experimentation on numerous alloys. The chromium plated surface Is so hard that the ordinary emery grinding compounds used for polishing would not touch it and it was necessary to devise anew polishing agency. Because of its silver-appearing luster and hardness, and because it does not tarnish, chromium plating probably will have important commercial applications other than being used for automobile headlight reflectors.
