LOEB.OLDAT2I, BROKEN BY LIFE IN PENITENTIARY But Leopold, Once Dominated by Dicky, Is Becoming Leader.
rt- Fsi'trf Press JOLIET, 111., May 21'*—When Clarence Darrow saved Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold from hanging for the murder of little Bobby Franks he predicted that In five years both of the young intellectuals would become “raving maniacs.” It is nearly two years now since Darrow made that pedietion and a check-up at Illinois State penitentiary here reveals that already strange changes are taking place in the mental make-up of these boys who once squirmed restlessly in the lap of luxury, plotting their "perfect crime.” Leopold, the “dupe” and follower of Loeb's more dominant personality, is gradually becoming a leader in his own right, while Loeb sinks lower each day into the routine that, is slowly breaking him up. As extensively a a prison life will permit, Leopold is branching out with occasional flashes of spirit. lie risked two days “strung up” in solitary recently to stead a lump of sugar. to freedom over tho body of a deputy warden. But Loeb. who was credited with all the driving power In the arrangements for slaying Bobby Franks, has done none of these things. Loeb is apparently broken by his confinement and hobbles about 'with a shrunken face. His once sleek black hair is beginning to turn gray around the temples and his eyes are haggard. For the first year Loeb worked in

the chair factory of the big prison. Then ho fell ill with measles and since then has been failing perceptibly. There f were reports that he had lost his mental balance, but prison authorities say the break seems to be more spiritual than mental. to have completely passed In mental and physical vigor the boy who formerly was recognized as leader of the millionaire pair. He even has hopes of again returning to the world he knew *before the Franks murder, according to those who are seeking to link him with the prison's latest outbreak. But Loeb is impressed with the futility of such a hope and tells his fellow prisoners, “It would be absolutely silly for me to make a break.” To those who knew the murderers before they were sent to prison the change that time has wrought in their personalities Is a completely reversal of what was expected. Leopold seemed destined to become the model prisoner, Ixieb the trouble maker. But Leopold has remained alert, to find himself involved In a daring prison break while Loeb, the dangerous calculating murderer, is an old man at 21, broken, weary and resigned.
ENGLISH DRESSES SHORT New Styles Abbreviatead to “Childishness.” Bu Unitrd Press , , LONDON, May 21.—“ The oldqr one grows the younger tho clothes” seems to be the motto of some of the English fashion designers. One of the newest styles features extremely short dresses well decked out with ribbons, strings and the-eld-fashioned sasli. AVomen seeing the new dresses displayed in the windows of the fashionable shops have at first imagined that they were dresses for children of 10 or 12 years of age. But they are worn by the mannequins as showing the newest style for grown-ups.

To Dr. AA’. B. Caldwell of Monticello. 111., a practicing physician for 47 years, it seemed cruel that so fnany constipated infants and children had to be kept “stirred up" and half sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts, calomel and nasty oils. While he knew that constipation was the cause of nearly all children's little ills, he constantly advised mothers to give only a harmless laxative which would help to establish natural bowel "regularity.” In Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin mothers have a regulating laxative which they can depend upon whenever a child is constipated, bilious, feverish or sick from a cold, indiges-
