RADIO ACTIVITY IS OUT EARTH’S AGE Studies So Far Indicate World Is Hundreds of Millions of Years Old. Times Washinoton Jiiireau. 1322 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, May 21.—Radioactivity in rocks is furnishing the scientists of the United States Geological Survey and others, with a new “lowdown” on the ago of Mother Earth. Studies which have so far been nuido have shown that her age must bo computed in hundreds of millions of years, greatly extending former estimates, a statement of the Survey said today. Somewhat as the hardening of the bones of a human being indicates his age, the accumulation of helium and lead in certain minerals indicates their age, but on a scale of millions of years, it was said. . This is based on the fact that helium and lead are the products resulting from radioactive decay of the elements uranium and thorium, and the age of the rocks is computed from the rate of such decay jgnd the quanities of these substance the rocks contains. , Geologists have sought for many •years for a reliable age measuringstick, using the depth of deposits, the fossils and attempts to determine the time of formation of sedimentary rocks and the cutting of valleys and gorges. Although the study of radioactive elements has only begun, it furnishes what may be the most valuable method yet found, the Survey statement said. A table of minerals, showing their age computed by this method, has. been published, and more chemical analyses of rocks are being made all the time.
