Own - A STORY OF A GIRL of TODAY WOMAN’S GREAT VIRILE The fact that 1 had been in danger of being murdered got no sympathy from -Mrs. Riley, in fact, subconsciously, I think she would Ituve been glad of it. It would have taken me out of Mamie's sight at least and she was becoming to be rather jealous of nty intimacy with Mamie. "Alon don't murder young girls in public parks." she sai 1 decidedly. “And if her beautiful bag was stolen 1 expect jt was nothing more Utan was coming to her. But lei her look out for herself. She is al together too independent for me. I don't want any one around bore that is asking my girl to imperil her immortal soul." t "Mother, mother. Judy did not do that. You don't understand.” inter rupted .Mamie. "Yes, I think I do understand. I understand too much about this girl that you took Into my house against my wishes. "There is only one of two tilings a girl can be in this world, and that is cither good or bad. There is nothing else. "All this foolishness about ‘voices' and 'checker hoards "f destiny' is poppycock. I don't know why they mean and 1 don't want to. But 1 do know that I ant not going to have my daughter running around with that Buddy Tremaine if I can help it. 1 thought that you had left him and gone to work respectably. You have been bringing your money home like a good girl and we have been very happy. You know that you are all that I have got with your sister at the sanitarium amj Tom spending all his money on that sickly wife of his. Where would we Ik> if you went hack to New York and left us? You have been entirely different since t his Dean girl has come into the house, und I don't, want you to have anything more to do with her. I don't like her. and I don't like her friends.” "Alother, mother, please stop. I'll talk to* you in the morning, but I am so tired now that I feel that T could not stand any more. I will this say to you, however, so that you will sleep better. No one, and this includes both Buddy Tremaine and Judy, is going to imperil my immortal soul for the next twentyfour hours at least." “WeJL say your prayers to the blessed saints and thank God that you have got a mother who can keep you on the straight and narrow path. Tomorrow 1 will bring Father O’Raferty to see you and he will tell you to think no more about your voice unless you can idng with a pure heart to the glory of God. Good night." Airs. Riley shuffled off to bed. (Copyright, 1016, NEA Service, Inc.) NEXT: Does lve Him? !
seven-eighths of them were on that diet. As I had heen growing tired of iny cooked vegetable dinner 1 thought I would tr\j a littlo meat for a change. % Breakfast, luncheon and dinpfr of the lean meat of one lamb chop and a slice of pineapple! It sounds very monotonous, but in reality it is not. It tasted very good to me for a whole week. A lot of people have tried to think that the combination of chop and pine apple formed an anti-fat food remedy. This is all nonsense. The whole diet only amounts to this: Three chops and three slices of pineapple is probably about one-fourth of what you usually eat. You don't eat so much food, and that which ybu do eat is deficient in calories. I haven't mentioned calories before because there is so much controversy over them. Some people say they cannot tell how many calories there are in certain foods, consequently they eat more when they diet than ever. Others insist they do not know what calories mean; But the whole theory of diet is that one must cat cnl.v enough energymaking foods to produce the energy that one wants and no more. One can easily work this out by experimenting on themselves. On the pineapple and lamb chop diet I lost only about a pourid and a half a week and it didn't satisfy my impatient soul. One of the greatest troubles of this fat reduction is getting discouraged at its slowness. We don’t stop to think that we have been taking on flesh for years. And if we could take off fifty pounds a year we should be perfectly happy. What we want to do Is to take-off fifty pounds a month. One of the kicks i get out of reducing was adventuring among the different diets, for like the colonel used to say of whisky: “All are good, but some seem to he better than others.” Tn other articles T will tell you more about them. I think I tried them all. NEXT: Fxeprinienting with unloosed foods.

Martha Lee Says BEING OLD MAN’S > DARLING NOT SO GOOD
Back in the prehistoric ages, being an old man’s darling wasn’t considered such a bad thing. In fact to be taken as bride by the Old Man of the tribe was something for the damosel to think about with interest.
It meant service-of a sort from the rest of the tribe, although the Old Aran’s older wives might make things a bit uncomfortable for one. But we've come a long way from those days. AVe’ve come to the conclusion that youth works out its own salvation best with youth. We no longer believe in Alay and December marriages, iven if December is wealthy and powerful socially. We no longer believe in sacrifice. Me know that both are intimately miserable. We know that, even under best circumstances, youth cannot satisfy the cultured, polished, experienced one who is ready to retire into his mind and his home, and let dances and frivolities alone. And we know that age cannot satisfy warm, pulsing, vibrant youth, eager td run, eager to dance, eager to latisfli and play. Each has what the other has not —but they can never combine the two across the great expanse of years. Old Man’s Darling r> Mi* I.do: i am a married woman -• .vtarg old And lnvo a habv f> months oM My husband will not let inn take my baby to my mothers at all. T am trying to make the best of things as mv people dno't believe m divorces. But w 4 <iro like two strangers. My sister-in-law said the older he pot the worse he would be. AN OED MAN'S DARLING. Like two strangers! How true that is in Alay and December marriages. No mental points of view the same. One must give up to the other, and it appears that your husband has th“ strongest will, probably cultivated in the hard, lonely years by himself. He has grown tyrannical as old men will sometimes, trying to force you to his way of living. Thereris nothing to prevent you from taking your baby to your mother to let her see it, except, your husband's unreasonable will. Surely you can he as firm when you are lining reasonable! Yes, make the he.-t of things. Cultivate young women friends. Have them in to sew with you or talk with And be yourself. Be as sweetly firm as your husband is nastily disagreeable. Unless you wish to really be his slave, you will have to assert yourself now, and perhaps bring .some respect for you into his mind and heart.
