TIMES GIRL IS CONFIDENT SHE WILL MAKE GOAL Swim Channel? Os Course, Says Miss Cannon on Eve of Sailing. T. 11]tan Cannon, the Baltimore mermaid. who is on her way under the auspices of The. Indianapolis Times and other Scrtpps-Howard newspapers, to try swimmincr the English Channel this summer, has all the advantage that high morale can arid to physical fitness. Here is how she felt about the great adventure as she waited in New York to make the start. By Lillian Cannon. NEW YORK, May 17.—Swimming the English Channel is a big order, 1 know, but I feel sure I shall be able to fill It. Overconfidence, I am aware, is not the most charming attribute in a woman, and to state calmly that T expect to do what no other woman and but three men have done certainly smacks of that. But honestly I feel no doubt or fear. Last/ summer when I swam from Tolchester to Bay Shore, across the choppy Chesapeake Bay, a twenty-two-mile swim, and finished in

WAS VERY WEAK AND SUFFERING Alabama Lady Says She Is Much Stronger After Taking Cardui and She Can Now Enjoy Life. Mrs. J. TV. Conaway of Fort Payne, Ala., says she has been enjoying splendid healih, a much bettor condition than that In which she found herself a couple of years ago. ,‘I was very weak and differed so much,” she says. ”1 was so tired, Just dragging around, feeling that I couldn't put ono foot In front of the other. *'l would almost faiut from weakness. My head, my neck and across my shoulders ached." Mrs. Conaway says that she was told about Cardui, with the result that—*‘l got a bottle and began taking it right away, r soon improved, and ate and slept, enjoying much better health. I took four bottles and am much stronger than I have been In a long time. Ido my work, walk over to visit my neighbors, and get pleasure out of life. “Cardui did me a world of good. I have reeoumiended it to others and expect to take it again when I need a tonic.” Among your own neighbors are probably some who have been helped by taking Cardui. Ask those who have taken it about how they were benefited. Then try Cardui for yourself. Sold by all druggists.

Members of the freshman class baseball nine had their first practice After practice was over, they were too excited to put all of their possessions back in their lockers. The team manager, who entered an hour later, found the locker room in the above condition. So he amused himself by drawing five straight chalk lines on the floor, dividing the room into sixteen parts with one forgotten article In each part. How were the lines placed? Last puzzle answer; The Caddie. Master at the city Golf Links bought 21 golf sets from 21 discouraged players. And paid $7 apiece for them, making a total cost of $147. He sold these to the original owners the following spring for $9 a set. He therefore received $lB9 for all the sets (21x9). The profit on the deal was $42. This Is his cost price of G sets The profit on each can be also figured in this fashion; $2 on each set for 21 sets equals $42. eleven hours despite bad weather, I was In excellent condition at the finish. Lost on Bay This I did with practically no sleep the night before, as I was on a launch that ran Into a sand bar. We spent the night trying to figure out where we were and how we could make a landing. The swim across the Chesapeake had never before been accomplished by a woman. I have no fear of the water, and I have no consciousness of nerves. I am in excellent physical condition, and expect to go into strict training for the next two months. This means I shall limit my diet to only the most nutritive food and eliminate all sweets or rich things, and that I shall swim every day in the channel. July has been chosen as the month for my swim because at this time the water is most comfortable and the currents are about as favorable as they ever are. Other swimmers have had Jazz orchestras accompany them in boats to cheer them. I shall have my two dogs, instead. They are braver company. Not Out For Speed I shall start from the French side, as all swimmers do, and if possible I should like to start at night. This, of course, however, will depend upon the day and the climatic conditions. I prefer to swim at night. The one phase of the event that interests me not at all is the time it

takes to get across. I am not at all -concerned with making record speed. Rather, I am going to take my time to it and If I run into bad weather or particularly difficult currents, I shall not waste my'strength fighting the waves, but go with the current until I strike easier waters. For the most part. I expect to use the breast stroke, alternating with the crawl and the English over-arm stroke. This way, I shall keep any one set of muscles from becoming overstrained, and distribute the muscular effort as much as is possible. It is with joyous anticipation I start across the ocean for this event. Aside from the personal element of achieving a difficult and hitherto unaccomplished feat, I feel a responsiblity to women in general. It’s high time we had a woman representative In that little group of serious swimmers who have made the channel. Back Ached So He Couldn’t Bend Over Kidneys Disturbed Him During the Night.
