DAUGHERTY BANK MYSTERY MAY BE CLEARED UP NOW Indictment of Former Attorney General Expected to Reveal Transactions. t Tim Woshinrjton Bureau. Sew Fork Avmue WASHINGTON, May -14.—Indictment, of Former Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty in New York may bring to light long-sought. Information about mysterious transactions in Ma! Daugherty's bank at Washington Courthouse, Ohio, according to an article in the Philadelphia Public Ledger by bllnton W. Gilbert. This information had to do with an account in the bank in the name of Harry M. Daugherty. Tnto this account, it is charged, went $40,000 of the $301,000 which it is alleged was paid a graft by a Swiss who fraudulently acquired the American Metals property from Allen Property Custodian Thomas W. Miller. Miller was indicted with Daugherty. So was John T. King, former Republican national committeeman from Connecticut. Jess W. Smith, former boon companion of Daugherty here, would have been Indicted If he had been alive. Smith committed suicide three years ago. The Story According to Gilbert's story in this Republican newspaper the in dictment brings to light : First, charges that Miller, King and Smith collected $301,000 graft for fraudulently turning over $7,000,000 of alien property, $4-0,000 being deposited in the Daugherty account. Second, for way of defense, it was said this'money was collected for Republican party expenses. Third, that there was a conspiracy among Republican leaders to "get” Miller. The Daugherty Senate Investigating Committee tried two years ago to get Information about the Daugherty bank and was halted'by court action. Recently when Harry M. Daugherty was called as a wit ness in w the American Metals ease in New York, he issued a statement saying he could not appear without Involving the name of the late President Harding. And finally Daugherty and his brother later testified the records of the account had been destroyed. Campaign to Hush There has been a campaign to hush the Inquiry ever since Attorney General Stone put his assistant, William J. Donovan, In charge of the Investigation, according to Gilbert. The department of justice was warned Harding might be involved. Gilbert’s version Is that the account was started In 1920 when Daugherty was Harding^ campaign
