May 3 3.—What Mill all this spectacular )x>lar exploration mean to the world? Not much, according to "Washington authorities, unless land is discovered in the great 2,500 squaremile area Amundsen has been flying over. If there is land between the Pole and Siberia or Alaska, these polar explorations may mean two things: 3. Most, improvements of scientific weather forecasting. 2. Possible discovery of mineral deposits in the suppositious polar continent. Not Equipped None of this year's polar expeditions will mean much in a scientific May. according to Dr. I.ouis Bauer, head of the magnetic division, Carnegie Institute. They are not equipped to do worth-while scientific observations —and learn something nbout the effect of the aurora borealis on radio and communication. I “It could be determined how much j Polar storms influence our weather. This polar weather forecasting. could be more accurate and the length of time of definite forecasts could be extended.” As to possible mineral deposits in the suppositious body of land ! Ainundsen is trying to discover, Stephen R. Capps, assistant chief of the north Alaskan division. Geological Survey, says one person’s guess about that is as good as another’s. “The value of polar coal deposits, however, would he problematical, even if they M - ere found to exist.
