TWO POLICEMEN DENY COMPLICITY IN BRIBE MR Chief Checks Up on Statements —To Be Considered by Grand Jury. Police Chief Claude F. Johnson was at work today checking: up on statements made Lite "Wednesday by two police officers implicated by Patrolman Griffin C. Marry, who lias admitted taking: bribes from resort*. Marry resigned from the force after he had admitted, tn a sworn state moot, that he had accepted weekly contributions from ten Indiana Ave. gambling house and blind tiger operators, in return for giving them personal protection from arrest. Johnson said the two officers, i sergeant and a patrolman on an adjoining district, both denied any complicity in connection with the bribes or the protection guarantee, lr. was said that the sergeant was l lie first to call attention to Marcy's evident lax law enforcement. Warned by Sergeant Marry, in his statement, alleged he had been warned by the sergeant not to bother suspected gambling places unless be had specific com plaints from headquarters. On one occasion he said he was told to stay away from a Negro lodge eelehra tion, because two Negro officers were assigned there, and added that he watched most of the persons leave the place Intoxicated. Johnson said that he will have the two Implicated officers In his office for questioning. The Marion County grand Jury will investigate the condition alleged in Marcy’s statement. Prosecutor William H. Remy said. No action on the matter is expected this week, however, he stated. Thirteen Arrested Meanwhile police continued their campaign against liquor a.nd gambling law offenders, arresting thirteen persons Wednesday night. Sergeant O'Connor and squad raided the poolroom and dry beer saloon of Charles Hyde, Negro, 734 Blake St., when they said they saw Hyde and Butler Summers, Negro, 802 Athens St., and Arthur Jackson, Ne gro, 833 Colton St., standing at tho bar drinking white mule. Summers was found with a. revolver. He was charged with carrying concealed weapons and all were slated on blind tiger charges. Suspicious Shed Package Sergvtnt Eisenhut said he watched Ralph Miller. 1169 W. Twenty-Eighth St., walk out of an auto top shop carrying a suspicious package. Eisenhut stopped him arid Miller is said to have handed him the package, saying It was a quart of brandy. He was charged with operating a blind tiger.
