STOCK EXCHANGE ’TRADING IS DULL; CHANGES SMALL Second Hour Recessions Wiped Out by Short Covering. Average Stock Prices Average for twenty industrial stocks lor Saturday was IVO.IO. off 2.03. Average for twenty rails for Saturday was 106.48. off .74. llu United Press NEW YORK. May B.—The short session developed as expected. It was a dull affair, with price move ment of little consequence. A slight flurry of selling at the end of the first hour caused some reaction, which subsequently was wiped out when short covering developed. Little disposition was evident to boom stocks in either direction with the exit of many people from the street Over the week-end the market more than ever was strictly a traders’ affair. Listlessness of the market was jahown in Mack Truck, which, on small volume, ran down to 111 and on about 1,000 shares snapped back to 113. There was some Detroit buying of General Motors. U. S. Rubber was under pressure, getting to a new low for the year. The market closed irregular.

Bu United Press CHICAGO, May B.—Grains closed irregular on the Chicago Board of Trade today. All showed strength due to the sharp rise In wheat prices. Wheat closed sharply higher. Reports of rust in Texas caused prices to advance sharply, although bearish reports of rain in the northwest and discounts on Chicago and Kansas City wheat had kept the market dull before that. Corn closed lower for the May and September deliveries' and remained unchanged for July. It displayed a firmer tone than for several days. Oats closed higher,, showing real strength on the rising market. • Provisions also closed higher. Chicago Grain Table —May 8— WHEAT— Prrv. Open High. ’Low. The prediction was hoard again that spot sugar would reach the H -cent level next week and this view was supported by favorable reports regarding 'he movement of granulated sugar. Withdrawals have been considerably larger tin- (last week and the expectation is that the refiners will become more actively interested in he mat-lit to rplenish their stocks We sec nothing to change the opinion which we have expressed ail along that futures would continue to advance and we believe that those who will buy without regard for current fluctuations will be able to sell at a substantial nrofit later on. 1 RAW SUGAR PRICES Prev. There seems to be a disposition to buy the new crops as far ah'a/1 as poasible indicating a belief that the demand for cotton this fall will have a constantly growing tendency as the season advances. It also indicates a desire to get as far away from the stacks on hand at the end of the season. The week close* with the bulk of tin cotton bought r.s-ently in strong 1 winds and the short interest held by traders who seldom maintain a position any length of time. Purchases of December andr January, half way between the extreinrs look to be the lent investment. We see nothing ill the weather to warrant safe* except of a profit taking nature oil sudden advances. NEW ORLEANS High. Low. Close. Finally. he was to graduate from the old Ray school in Hamblen Township of Brown County. We had ordered his . graduation suit from a mail order house and one spring evening he hitched up the horse and buggy to go to town and get the suit from the express office. Afterwards, they found the suit in the buggy. He never got to wear it. He never got to gradute.” Here the mother faltered, then went on. “Afterwards, people came and told me how he had met a man in town: a strange man. They said he and the man broke into a store. Thousands of miles from my boy’s thoughts, that. I know. Anyway, that just seemed to mark the end of everything for Ralph. He liked nature; always loved the birds and trees and all out doors, so I understood why, months later, he ran away from the institution he had been sent and came home. Tighter and Tighter “Several times he escaped and in the sentences that would always lie added he wound himself tighter and tighter into a crime record. Again and again he tried to go straight, but this record and had associates, who seemed always to show up at the wrong time, tripped him and down he'd go. I feel that he was done terrible injustices. His ninny escapes—they were miraculous because of his longing for freedom.” Than the mother got down a roll of drawings that her imprisoned boy had made and she read some lines from a poem he had written, not perfect there, bu twith a thread of Statement of Condition OF THE United American Ins.
