POLICE FIND GANGSTERS’ FORTRESSES Amazing Operations of Vice Kings Bared at Chicago —Millions Netted. Itu Time* Special CHICAGO, May 3.—While a grand jury boson its investigations today into the machine gun murders of William McSwiggin, Chicago's hanging prosecutor, and two beer runners. Jimmy Dougherty and Thomas Duffy, the police clean-up of Cicero, where the murders occurred, revealed that Johnny Torrio and Scarfaco A1 Caponi, twin kings of vice and crime, netted more than $3,000,000 a year from their operations. Scouring Gangland for the slayers, authorities came upon evidence which revealed the full power of organized crime in Chicago and the methods it employs to keep its business of vice and murder on a paying basis. Arsenals Found Detectives and policemen in their raids upon ltiding places of the gangsters. turned up arsenals and fortresses equipped with secret passages, trap doors and sliding panels. Caponi, who is believed to have been the man behind the machine gun assassination, took elaborate \ precautions against interference with his business. At his apartment they, found a small arsenal, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, machine gun equipment, revolvers and sawed off shotguns. Sliding Panels The walls of saloons, controlled by him, were covered with mysterious sliding panels, operated by push buttons. "'Behind the panels were firearms and ammunition ready for use on a moments’ notice if the law or competition threatened. Oil paintings on the walls concealed small holes through which revolvers or rifles could be fired into the barroom in case of siege. Back of the paintings were apartments big; enough for three men. Never before had authorities investigated Cicero thoroughly enough to realize the full extent of crime’s grip on that suburb. The theory that Searface is back jof the murders was strengthened by the story of one witness. He said Searface with his brother Ralph and two other men, were talking excitedly In a saloon. Presently Scarface arose, shoved back a panel, took out a machine gun and all four left. Two hours later, McSwiggin and his companions were dead.

MURDER SAID TO HAVE FOLLOWED DRINKING AFFAIR ‘Dummy’ Ford, Gang Leader, Killed—Negro Alleged to Have Confessed. Police today held Elmer Reverend. ?6, Negro, 1031 Colton St., who according to an alleged confession, shot and killed Joe (Dummy) Ford, 32, of 743 W. New A'ork St., police character and a leader in Willie Carey’s west side gang. The shooting is said to have followed a drinking bout under a railroad elevation on Douglas St., earh Sunday. Ford, Reverend, John Ford, Joe's brother; Willie Carey, Viola Kress, alias Ford, 743 W. New York St.; Christy Thorp, 26, of 334 Beauty Ave., and Della Carter, 23, of 211 Blake St., were participating in the bout, when Reverend made a remark to one of the women and Dummy Ford struck him, police say. Chased by Two Ford and Thorpe then chased Reverend to New York and .Geisendorff Sts., where Reverend turned and fired at Ford. The bullet pierced his side and he collapsed. He was car rled to a nearby porch by Rollio Lynch, 20, of 1207 W. New York St., and Thorpe, and died there in a few minutes. Thorpe told police that one of two men standing on the corner shot Ford on slight provocation, but Reverend’s alleged confession would contradict this story. Coroner Paul F. Robinson aid he would investigate. Figured In Crime Willie Carey and Dummy Ford and his brothers have figured in the city's crime for years. One of the highlights of their career was the attacking of Patrolman Patrick Kinney, severely beaten in a fight with them. Walter (Cigars) Caswell, 22, of 1021 W. New York St., was held on a vagrancy charge. Police said Ford and Caswell engaged in a fight before the shooting.
