‘Bootleg Freedom ’ for Women Over , Says Writer
She’s Not Modern, but Just Herself at Last, Englishman Thinks. Ru V Senicg NEW YORK, April 30.—The "modern woman?” She is only a phrase. This In the epigrammatic opinion of Gilbert Frankau, English novelist. critic, and political writer, whose '■reation of feminine characters has made him internationally famous. "For many generations,” explains Frankau, who is making his first visit, to America, “there was a prohibition act on woman. Her freedom had to be ‘bootlegged,’ as you say here in America. Then one day the prohibition law was repealed—and out stepped your so-called modem woman. “She is not a modern woman—she is just a woman. The point is that as long as the prohibition law was nforced, the woman was not entirely herself—like the liquor one gets in America, or so I am told, A Word of Caution "Not that I think any author is capable of saying that he knows all about women, or half about them,” Frankau cautioned. “I think a writer, or anyone else for that matter, is extremely fortunate if he comes to really know two women—nis wife and his mother. Few achieve even that.” And a word from Frankau about some of the women of his own country here. ' . r . Gilbert Frankau from many recent British visitors to America you easily might divine os much. I feel It is time the impression was being corrected. England is doing very nicely, thank you. But the less I say about our so-called representatives, the better.” Frankau, thus far in observations, finds the American woman appearing to take far greater advantage of her liberation than does her English sister. But then, he explains,
the English girl Is Instinctively repressed. 1 A Fellowship of Slang *‘l find you have a type of slana quite similar to our own.” Frankau comments. “Your Sugar daddy Is known to us as a flapper chaser, and your cake eater is a poodle faker. All generations and all times have had the old man seeking the young girl. It was the basis of one of Bacon’s wisest sayings—and It goes farther back than Bacon.” Several years ago Frankau created a stir through an article that dealt with the subject of the worst women being able to capture the best type of men. “I have not changed my views,’’ he says. “They were true then and they still are. The best type of man is a busy man. He doesn’t have time to go about poodle faking. He doesn’t know much about “women. He becomes easy prey for the socalled vampire type. Os course, in time he finds out. But that doesn't disprove the contention.”
THOUGHTS TRANSMITTED Brain-Wave Conducting Is Pronounced Success. By United Press LENINGRAD, April 30.—Experiments in thought-reading, conducted by the academician. Dr. Becktereu, at the Cerebral Institute here, have produced amazing results, according to the group of scientific research — workers and students who conducted them. The transmitting agent was stationed in one room and the receiving agent in another. Concentrating his gaze and his entire attention upon a simple drawing or geometrical design on a clean sheet of paper, the transmitting agent attempt to impress this linage sharply upon his own mind. Standing in a distant room, the receiving agent drew the same design or sketch, line for line. COLOR COMBINATIONS The combination of citron and rose, or citron and certain more conscious shades of green is extremely smart.

DINERS CATCH FISH Novel Restaurant Located on Frisco Bay. Bw United Press SAN FRANCISCO, April 30.—A catch-your-own fish restaurant is now projected by Abe Rues and other San Francisco capitalists. “This is anew scheme for the Pacific Coast, but It Is an old idea on the Mediterranean," Rues said, in describing his plans. As head of the Commercial Center Realty Company, Rues has applied to the board of State harbor commissioners for a location for his novel restaurant on San Francisco Bay, where ho can get as much Neapolitan atmosphere as possible. Many of the bay fishermen are Europeans, so Rues thinks he can give his patrons plenty of color. Customers who may not be so lucky with the hook and line will not he denied the privilege of eating how- j ever, as they can be handily sup- i plied by commercial fishermen.
