FLIRTATION OVER PHONE . IMPOSSIBLE ‘'Telephone subscribers who flirt over the wires with the telephone girls more than three times will have their numbers canceled. Don’t get worried. This is only part of a recent order Issued by the Hong Kong, Chjna, telephone Company. Hard to think of a Chinaman flirting, isn’t it? Simply shows that human nature is pretty much the same the world over and almondeyed Oriental has the same “line” up Ids flowing sleeve as his occidental brother. Seems they're a bit more severe over there, though. On one occasion the Chinaman can lauch a sweet nothing; twice he can do this with impunity; the third time, he tries it and bang! out goes his telephone. Here in America, system puts awful crimps in a man’s flirtatious activities. If he says. "Hello, sweetheart!” he Is answered with a noncommittal "Number, please." If*he tries it several times, lie still is out of luck, for he is turned over to the supervisor, and whether her tones are severe or dulcet, the words are a set little speech: “This is the supervisor. What is it please?" How could even the most experienced male flirt proceed after that? “Our telephone operators don’t have any trouble with wnuld-be flirts,” commented A. M. Taylor, division traffic superintendent of the Bell Telephone Company. "I’ve made extensive inquiries in the different departments, and the girls say they have absolutely no trouble with amourously-inclined subscribers. But telephone operators have no time for extraneous conversation. A survey of a modern switchboard Will show why. Removing and replacing of plugs in response to ligrht signals goes on constantly and fapidly. There certainly is no opportunity for repartee. She doesn’t even get to ‘listen in’ on other people's conversation.” If you have anytodd moments to while away on the telephone get your number ready first and when across the wire floats that decorous little "Number, please,” the fair young operator never will suspect how feelingly you could exclaim, "Hello, Sweetheart!” if It wasn’t for the red-taped telephone system that stands between.
