GRAIN OF RICE SCdTFOR II First Chapter of Koran Engraved on It. Bn United Preen CAIRO, April 30.—A single grain of rice was sold at the Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition here for SSOO. It was just an ordinary grain of rice except that it bore writing to the extent of about 150 words. At the price it was more precious than the finest diamond of similar size. The inscribed grain was worked by Nassib Makaram, a Syrian Sheikh of the Lebanon, and a caligraphist of extraordinary skill. He wrote on the grain the famous first chapter of the Koran and the text of a speech made by-the-first Caliph, Abu Bakr, on the day the Caliph assumed the sacred office. The first chapter of the Koran, called the “Fatha” or “Opening,” is the Lord’s prayer of Islam and runs as follows: , “In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate; praise be to God, the lord of worlds, the merciful, the compassionate, lord of the day of judgment. Thee do we worship and of Thee we beg assistance. Bn Times BoccM CHOCAGO, April 30.—Refiners are obtaining 75 per cent more gasoline from a barrel of crude oil than they were able to obtain a few years ago, and the most efficient refiners have increased their gasoline recovery 200 per cent, according to a bulletin issued here today by the .American Research Foundation. “This is the most encouraging feature in the petrolei-n situation,” the bulletin states, “Gasoline today would be selling at prohibitive prices had it not been for this tremendous advance in scientific refining methods. “Comparatively few years ago reliners obtained an average of about 20 per cent of gasoline from a barrel of crude oil. Thp latest annual report of the Sinclair-Consolidated Oil Corporation reveals that this company recoverd an average of more than 60 per cent throughout the year 1925, and Government statistics show that the average recovery for the country as a whole was approximately 35 per cent.
