MOTHER OFFERS HOME TO BOY • WHO SLEW SON Love Triumphs Over Growing Bitterness in Heart. B/ .V FA Service NEWARK, N. J , April 30.—This Is a tale of a gread* victory—the triumph of a mother's heart over gnawing bitterness; the defeat of hatred at the hands of an all-en-compassing pity. Mothers who try to vision themselves In the place of Mrs. Sophie Niemiec may well ask themslves: "What would I have done?” society may look itself In the mirror and ponder on the Christlesson to be found In this humble working woman’s story. • • • Mrs. Niemlec's problem was this; Her son, Ben, had been slain by his chum, Boleslaw Dumbeck. The two boys had been inseparable companions. About seven years ago they went hunting muskrats in nearby meadows. Ben did not come home. Bays later his body was found, shot through the heart. Boleslaw insisted that the shooting had been accidental. Later he admitted a quarrel when detectives pressed him, pleaded guilty to secBid degree murder, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Bitterness At the time the bitterness in Mrs. Niemlec’s heart knew no bounds. But as the years slipped by she found herself thinking more and iwore of this lad who faced a lifetime behind prison bars. He was, after all, another lad just like her non. Was it not possible that the iihooting had been accidental? And how barren her life had become without her boy! How she yearned for a son! How she yearned /or someone to mother! The Dumbeck family moved away, but from time to time tales reached her ears of the youth who had killed her boy. He was not well in prison. He was insistent now that the shot had been accidentally fired. Closing her eyes she could see the two boys noisily playing in the yard, or making muskrat traps in a corner of the room. She could hear them Again urging her to make some ‘bread and butter and sugar!” Love And so she went to the prison to visit Dumbeck. After that she went often. She took him cakes and cookies. The bitterness began to disappear. Instead came the desire to mother this poor lad. She talked with him about the shooting. They recalled the old "play days.” A few days ago Mrs. Niemiec Governor Moore. BThe mother whose son had been *ain was pleading for the freedom of the slayer. More! She announced her willingness to adopt him! “I will be a mother to him,” she promises. “He says he will do right. I believe him. I know he will go straight. \ have prayed to God to help me and He has shown me the right.” • • • And the other mother—- “ For years she would not speak to me,” rejoices Mrs. Dumbeck, through her tears. “Now everything is all right again. The old hate is gone ” “And would you give up your son to her?” “Yes, but I do not need to. He Is coming home —home! I have seen
