HIGHWAY COSTS AREDECREASED American Er gineers Are Declared Efficient. CHICAGO, April 26. —American 81l r nitrd Pr.-ss engineers con construct enduring roads for one-twentieth of whnt it cost the highway builders of ancient Egypt and Rome, according to a bulletin of the American Research Foundation. “Cheops, builder of the Great Pyramid and father of roadmaking, who reigned 6,000 years ago,” said the bulletin, “employed 100,000 of his subjects for ten years under the blazing African sun to construct a road' from the quarries to the site of his pyramid so that great blocks of stone might be moved. The cost of this 3vork was incalculable. “The Appian 3vay, built by Appius Claudius in 350 B. C., would cost $100,000,000 to duplicate today, scientists estimate, or an average of $300,000 a mile. This highway of 360 miles is a solid strip of stone and mortar, three feet deep. “America builds more miles of higirway in a single day than the ancients constructed in a year. With the unprecedented, growth of automobile traffic and the development of the nation's oil resources by Standard Oil, Sinclair and other big producers incuring a steady supply of fuel, road building is proceeding at a rate never before known. “Cost of modern concrete highway in the United States today does not run more than SIO,OOO to $15,000 a mile. Ad3'anceinent of engineering science has made possible a thin strip 3vhich successfully stands a greater traffic burden than the ancient roads ever bore and costs only a fraction as much.” OLDEST OPERATOR IS 92 Birthday Falls on Anniversary of Telephone Invention. Bu. Times Rnccial CHILLICOTHE, Mo., April 20. .The fiftieth anniversary of the invention of the telephone which was recently celebrated fell on the , ninety-second birthday of L. N. Barker, 3vealthy business man here, 3vho claims to be the oldest living operator, 3vho served in the early days of the telephone. Barker operated the first long distance line from Chillicothe, from his desk in 1890. The line 3vas owned I by the Missouri-Kansas Telephone I Company and extended from Kansas ' City to Brookfield, Mo. loiter it reached to several points in the central part of the State. “It 3vas only one line,” Barker says, "and it was a tedious task getting through to Kansas City, often taking up an entire day.”
