INDIANA AMONG STATES AIDING MOTHERS, BABES Forty-Three Now Operating Under Sheppard-Towner Act. Times Washington liureau. 1322 Veto York Avenue WASHINGTON, April 23.-—Forty-tfflree States are now cooperating with the Federal Government in saving the lives of babies and mothers under the Sheppard-Towner act, Senatoft Sheppard of Texas, one of its authors, told the Senate recently. __ • The act, under which the Federal Government advances money to match State contributions in maternity and infancy work, has been under fire by States’ rights advocates, who charge it is an unwarranted extension of Federal authority. More Money Asked Sheppard asked that Congress extend the Federal appropriation of $1,2-10,000 for two morp years. The present appropriations expire June 30, 1927. Action at this session is necessary, Sheppard aid, in order -that tSate legislatures may know how to make up their budgets when they meet next winter. Sheppard said operation of the act had remedied much of the deplorable condition in regard to mother and child mortality and ill health since it was passed. The annual report of the children’s bureau, Department of Labor, shows that the work lias embraced better infant care through the teaching of mothers, better care for mothers before and after their babies are born, and more wide-spread medical and' pursing facilities, he said. Cites Conferences There were more than 10,000 child health conferences held in 1925, he said, and 022 child health centers and fifty-seven prenatal centers have been established. Special work and study has been undertaken in several States, including Tennessee and New Mexico, he said, the results of these studies being useful to other States. The forty-three States now cooperating include Alabama, California, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New' Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.
