INDIANA PAPER CARRIED SCOOP UPON ‘BEN HUR’ _—r Newspaper Woman Recalls Story of Proposed Publication 46 Years Ago. 11 v Timra snrcial NEW" YORK. ApriA 15.—New York newspapers today print the story tie-' scribing how the . Crawfordsville (Ind.) Journal printed the first scoop on the proposed publication of “Benllur/’ by Gen. Lew Wallace fortysix years ago. After viewing the motion picture version of “Ben-Hur,” now showingin New York. Elizabeth Hiatt Gregory, a New York newspaper woman and magazine writer and widow of i he late Frank W. Gregory, told how her husband received from General Wallace's own pen the first notice \of the impending publication of the story of ‘‘A Tale of the Christ.” ( ailed at Study Gregory, as a young reporter, used to call daily at the general’s study hi Crawfordsville, according to Mrs. Gregory. He went there with hopes of getting a news heat, as the general nvos prominent iff law and politics. arid his intimates said he had finished anew novel white in New Mexico, where lie had been the appointive governor of the territory. One day an important missive came to him in the mails from Hariier & Eros., publishers, and the general replied to the questioning of the newspa)*er man: ‘‘l've got it for you. f.end me your notebook and I will write it down.” Here is what he wrote: Told of Book ”The title of the book is ‘BenHur, a Tale of the Christ.’ The hero is a Jew. The scene is variously laid, but chiefly in Antioch and Jerusalem. It opens with the birth of Christ and concludes with His crucifixion. The thirty years’ interval between thp entry of Christ upon His mission is filled with accessory incidents on land and on sen. going to shdw the cleinoraliff.i----1 tion which prevailed in the world. The book is orthodox, recognizing Christ as the Sorfof God. The Harper brothers .of New York are the publishers atul the copy has been delivered to them. The book will be issued as soon as possible. The author began the book before his appointment to New Mexico and onefourth of it was written 'in that country. Whatever may be said of it. It is original. I believe there has never been anything like it.” This first adavnee notice of “BenHur” appeared in the Crawfordsville Journal forty-six years afo, and it was substantially the way the book was advertised when issued soon afterward by Harpers.
MORE WOMEN FOR CONGRESS, TRIO PREDICTS Denies Miss Robertson’s Opinion Representation Will Continue Small. fill Timm Unrein! WASHINGTON. April 15. —Women are in Copgrpss to stq,y, They have a definite place there. The trio now i nthe House will'be joined by others ft) the next Congress and by slid others as time goes on. This is the forecast of the ’'woman’s bloc" in the present Congress* nil three members of which are so strong in this belief afters session here that they are seeking re-elec-tion. Those in touch with the situation in their districts say they all will be returned, though there is opposition. Their prediction, is in contrast with the opinion expressed not weeks ago by a former woman member of Congress, Miss Alice Robert-* son. Miss Robertson, who is responsible for many quaint and witty statements which often startled by their frankness, said she believed there would never me more than two or three women in Congress at the same time. Newspaper Woman The Oklahoma woman. who returned her** as a newspaper correspond! n t after her service in Congress, is recognized as somewhat of a. sage, but those who have followed her fti Congress believe she is wrong this time. The women here now. Representatives Rogers of Massachusetts and Kahn of California, Republic ans. and Representative Norton of New Jersey, like their work. a! ..though all admit they have been very busy. They ajjrec that the function o' a woman in Congress ik just the same of a man. They expect to lie treated on an equal basis, asking no Special favors. “Women will he especially ■hplpfiil in welfare legislation, in helping with measures that affect the home, the woma.fi and the child," Mrs. Norton said. “There is riot a particle of differ ence in tlie fond ion of- a man and •i woman in Congress,” Mrs. Kahn said. I think tiqit lias been demonstrated h.v tlie work of the women here now. especially in their committee work. . Novelty Worn Off “Tin* men now accept us just as they do men members. The novelty hns worn off. ] -think this is a natural development from tlie rec ognitlon of women in business and (ommeijrial life." Mrs. Norton said if was ’her opinion that wotrmn wlio have served in State legislatures should come to Congress. She believes that women should go through tlie various steps, just as men do. being pro moted from one step to another. There is one thing about tlie women members -,o"f^’on gross. They attend the Mouse sessions regularly, even sitting throdgh tedious consideration of appropriation lulls, and they are Very zealous in their committee attendance. 4
