OUSTED PARK BOARD HEAD TO MAKE LAW TEST Duvall Names Clarence I. Baker to Succeed Emsley W. Johnson. Two presidents of the city park board were iri office today. And Emsley W. Johnson, deposed by Mayor Duvall as president in favor of Clarence I. Baker, president of Baker Bros. Furniture Company, indicated today the conditions would exist for some time. “I propose tp fight this issue out,” said Johnson. ‘‘l know of no cause for my removal and had rio warning from Mayor Duvall it would take place. The law says park board members may be removed only for cause and I shall test Its efficacy.” Wrote letter Duvall wrote a letter to Johnson, saying, “I hereby accept your resignation,” but Johnson said he did not resign and had no intimation his resignation was sought. It is known the Coffin wing of the local Republican organization has been exerting heavy pressure on Mayor Duvall to pave the way for removing a number of park board employes in preparation for the fight In the primary. One position especially sought is that of women's recreation head, held by Mrs. Alice Kessler. Johnson has opposed her removal because she has been Qualified through university training for the position. Politicians said Coffin workers also are eager to remove R. Walter Jarvis, parks superintendent. Leaves City After authorizing the change, Mayor Duvall left for Kansas City, Mo., for opening of the American Association baseball season. Baker said he would accept the appointment, hut said he was surprised it took place.
