REPAIR OF CITY STREETS HELD UP BY WEATHER Ask SIOO,OOO Appropriation for Department—Force Is Reduced. As ruin alternates with snow in the Indianapolis spring weather menu, employes of the street depart nient are waging a hard battle to pluce the city streets and alleys in good condition. Not lor many years have the city workers been so handicapped in the spring drive. Weather has delayed street paving and repairs several weeks, according lo George G. Schmidt, city engineer. Schmidt asked the patience of tho public, especially with regard to muddy alleys, because street repairs must be accomplished first. Alleys are in such soft condition that it Is impossible for graders and rollers to pass through them to effect the repairs. The street department also is hindered by insufficient funds and a reduction of employes, George Woodward, street, superintendent, said. To remedy this condition Woodward asked city council to appropriate to his department SIOO,OOO the city received as its share of the automobile license tax. Meanwhile, Schmidt is conducting a school for street inspectors so they may efficiently determine

A resume of the National Conference on Industrial Relations held in Washington in January, was given by Mrs. Margaret Tomlin Hoop, a't the convention of the May Wright SewtU, Indiana Council of Women, at the I.incoln today. Mrs. Hoop is director of the department of women and children, State industrial board. A luncheon, at which the Indianapolis Local Council of Women were hostesses, was held in the Travertine room.
