[TARIFF ONLY A SMOKE SCREEN, , SAYS FREDRICK Candidate Declares G. 0. P. Duty No Benefit to Farmers. A protective tariff never has and never will benefit the fanner, John E. Fredrick, candidate for the Democratic long-term nomination for United States Senator, said at a meeting of the Democratic Progressive League at the Indiana Democratic Club Monday night. "The Republican protective tariff on farm products is nothing more than a smoke screen intended to placate, if not to deceive.” However, Fredrick said voters of the country never will stand for any revision of the tariff which will bring about lower wages or depreciation. Fredrick declared that for the j prosperity of all, the Government should extend aid immediately to agriculture. by legislation and guarantee, the same opportunities it has extended to all national industries. MAN, 80, FACES MURDER CHARGE Returned When Son-in-Law Dies. iJw United Pres* CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind., April 6.—" William Hayes, SO, who lies seriously wounded in a hospital here today now faces a grand jury indictment charging first degree murder. The indictment was returned, following the death of Ray Shelton, Hayes' son-in-law. who was shot by the aged man following a family quarrel. Hayes Is said to he have shot. Shelton when the son-in-law sought to intervene when the father whipped his daughter, Shelton's wife. After shooting Shelton, Hayes sought to commit suicide. APPENDICITIS IS FATAL Toiing Son of Purdue Publicity . Director Dies. p\> United Press LAFAYETTE. Ind., April 6. Plans were being made here today for the funeral of Thomas R. Johnston Jr., 10-year-old son of Thomas Johnston, publicity director for Purdue University. The child died following an operation for appendicitis. Dramatic Club to Present Comedy

Herbert James The Brookside Dramatic Club will present “It Pays to Advertise,” a comedy, for the benefit of the Brookside I. O. U. Club, an auxiliary to the Brookside Dodge, F. and A. M., Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the East Tenth Street M. E. community house, E. Tenth St. and Keystone Ave. Herbert James is one of the leading members of the cast. Mrs. W. L,.
