Glorious Easter Thought
ASTER, commemorating; to Christian believers the I-tesur-rection of the Savior of Mankind, but almost universally observed as a time of joy and feasting, is the oldest of all the festivals' in tho Christian calendar. Easter signalizes the formal dawninn of Springtime. Winter is at an end; the trees and tlowers, stirring from their slumbers and throwing off their coverlets of snow, put forth buds and blossoms; there Is balm in the air. It is tlie real awakening of tho new year... Easter even antedates Christmas as ono of the universal days of i*ejoicing. For while Eostre or Psaoha, ancient designations of the day, has been olxserved from the time of the foundation of the Christian religion, it was not until four centuries after the birth of Jesus of Nazareth that Ills natal day was set apart for general commemoration. As leading to the Joyous observance of Easier, increasing importance has been attached by Christian peoples in later years to Long, or God’s, or Good Friday, as it is variously known, immediately preceding the Easter festival. It is probably, as tlie day on which the tragedy of the cross was enacted on the hill of Golgotha, the most sacred and solemn of the Christian year. In most of the churches on Good Friday the altars are stripped of all their decorations, the cross is shrouded in black, and the day is given over to prayer and meditation. This note of solemnity is even reflected in the uffairs of the secular world, most of the States of the Federal Government having made it a legal holiday. From the earliest days of the Christian era Friday has been regarded as a day for fasting, as Sunday has been a feast day; and the connection between the one as marking the day of crucifixion and tlie other as marking the day of the resurrection is easily traced. One of the most interesting facts in connection with Easter is that its origin dates back to the old Jewish

Feast of the Passover. According to a church historian, “Tho first Christians being derived from or intimately connected wltji the Jewish church, naturally continued to observe the Jewish festivals; though in anew spirit, as commemorative of events of which those had been shadows. The Passover, . ennobled by the thought of Christ as the trife Pascal Eamb, continued to be celebrated and became the Christian Easter.” Early differences arose as to the precise day on which the Easter festival should be observed. In the Jewish calendar the .Passover occurs on a fixed day of the month. The Christians assigned Easter to Sunday, that being the first day of the week and the day, according to Scripture, that Christ arose from the dead. ** Astronomical problems of a complex character were largely responsible for these differences, which continued until the year 325 A. D. when the council of Nicea decreed that everywhere in Christendom, Easter should be observed on the same day. It was not until the adoption of tlie Gregorian Calendar in 1582, however, that this decree secured 3 nythlng like general acceptance. Even now, though the Gregorian Calendar was within the past year adopted in the Near East, there are some of the Oriental congregations in which Easter is observed sometimes before, and sometimes f.fter, the date on which the Festival Is celebrated in the western churches. According to Barry, historian of the Book of Common Prayer, "It’s old name was Pascha, hoth in tho East and YVest, and ei.'lless titles of honor and reverence were heaped upon it. The Pasch-egg, symbol of life out of what seemed dead, the salutation, 'Christ is risen,’ of tho Eastern custom, all show how from time immemorial Easter has been the great festival of hope and love.”
