Puzzle a Day Mrs. Daley was selling all her golden bantam eggs to hatcheries. She was getting high prices for them and rarely saved any for her family to eat. Two days before Easter she discovered there were no eggs or dyes in the house for the usual batch of Easter eggs. In great exfitment, she sent this note to her sister: “Pie asesa vet wel ved yede aste reg gsf orm yeh ildr eniha ves ol dallrni ne.” Although the note contained all the necessary letters, she jumbled the words in such a peculiar fashion that her sister could not read it. Can you do it for her ? East puzzle answer: ' -p LAST JUMPS CAPTAIN’S -J / . P==? ___ SERGEANTS * %Y. POLICEMANS ♦ 1 GROUND FLOOR —*L—T T.iJ The jail stairs is made up of nineteen steps. The puzzle told you the captain went five steps at a time and the diagram showed that he reduced this pace to four steps for the last few steps. In the same way you discover that the sergeant went four steps at a time, and finished wtih only three steps, and the policeman went three steps and finished with one step. If you start with the smallest mutiples of 5 minus 1 that is (4, 9, 14 etc.) and see which one fulfills the conditions of the puzzle you will very quickly discover the answer. Other answers are possible but are too large to be applied to s:eps. 19 divided by 6 equal 3 4-5; 19 divided by 4 equals 4%; 19 divided by 3 equals 6 1-3.)
