, basis for the seed bed. For ideal results at least four to six inches of good soil should cover the area to , be seeded or sodded later. Grading The surface of the latvn should be brought to a uniform grade before the seed bed is made. The grade should slope away from the foundation of the house. The seed lied proper should be cultivated or raised. After a lawn is one seeded nothing can be done to remedy a poor grade without losing valuable j time, and money. Fertilization Phosphorus, potash and nitrogen are the three principal elements of j all plant food, and the latter Is the one that is of most importance in * producing a vigorous and luxuriant | growth of desirable grasses. Well-rotted manure is the best i i fertilizer to use, and should be ! j worked into the seed bed before the | seeding. If commercial fertilizer is j used, use a standard preparation i carrying a formula of about 4-10-4, ias is known in trade. The commercial preparation should be used before the seed is applied. After the new seeding has opportunity to establish itself, an addition- I al amount of fertilizer may be needed j to stimulate and keep the grasses in J i a vigorous, growing condition. The j j amount to be used varies as to the j | commercial brands, and special at- I | tention should be given the direc- | i tions obtained at time of purchase, i Three to four pounds per 100 square ! feet is a good average application. If the soil is sour or acid, an ap- i plication of lime should be given be- j | fore seeding. The applications of j

lime may be needed from time to time. Seeding The usual mixture nseifTn seeding comes with a high percentage of blue grass and red top—-about 60 per cent blue grass and 40 per cent red top—with several varieties of other grasses supporting them. In case of extreme shady locations, a special mixture should lie obtained. Broadcast seed evenly over surface. A practice is to divide the seed evenly into two parts and sow half one way and remaining portion crosswise over tlie first seeding. For new lawns use five to six pounds per 1,000 square feet of surface. White clover should be used, but should not lie incorporated in the j general mixture. After sowing the |

basic mixture, give a light after seeding of the clover. Watering light subsequent seedings of the basic mixture should Vie given every fall or spring until the ideal lawn is obtained. There must be neither too much nor too little water. Excess water should Lie taken care of by proper surface drainage, or where necessary. tile drainage. Avoid light sprinklings. Water thoroughly to a depth of several inches. a thorough soaking once or twice a week is far better than light sprink lynig ever evening. Apply moisture after the heat of the day has passed. ante cutting should not be too close the first season to protect the iung and tender crowns of the plants from the sun.
