OLD BACHELORS ARE SLAMMED BY U.S. EXPERT Generally Speaking He Is Failure in Federal Service. United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, March 19. —The "old bachelor” generally speaking, Is a failure in Uncle Sam’s service. Herbert D. Brown, efficiency expert for the Government, told the United Press today in an exclusive Interview that he had yet to see a peally successfud bachelor in the Bervice. The bachelor man, unlike the “old maid’—designated by Brown as the gem of Government servants is pelflsh and not get very far, he paid. Favors Little Men "Uttle men, the 'Napoleons” are likely to he buzz saws,” Brown said. "Backbones often come in (Short Pleasure. “The lean, hungry man who steeps less at night is the second of two physical types usually successful in business life.” Big men, six feet tall and a yard Wide, are often too cunroersome to succeed in Government or commercial life. Brown said. Fat men are too easy going. The expert said these two types let the slim and sprightly chaps run circles around them. • R “Married men make the best emPployes,” Brown continued. “There must be a great deal of give-and-take in commercial life and there is no better place to learn it than through the exigencies of married life.” Against Youngsters Youngsters are not stars in the '.business world, he pointed out. Men .do not get their stride until after they are 30. By that time they have settled to their work as a career. “The restless, squirming, intelligent'optimist is likely to rise in the (“world. 'At 40 or 50 years he may Sind himself a leader. This type is of the belief that progress is being made. “But the other mental type of jnan sticks to the statu quo. He presents an excuse for not *3oing something new. The most inexcusable person I can think of is ;the one who instinctively seeks a rTeason for not doing some advisable fthing.” Brown said the college man airways has a chance to rise. College rmen should not be mere theorists, [but think also on the practical side -jot things, he warned. “There is another type of man who is successful in the commercial "Sield,” the chief efficiency expert seaid. “He comes from the outside little of the problems of dhe task he is undertaking. This man is active, resourceful and full of accomplishments. He supplements and leads but leans on 'the detail man who has grown up in the servI ice. The two make a good team.”
