y/er' A STORY OF A GIRL of TODAY A HAT-CHECKER’S PHILOSOPHY “A hat girl Is a good one to try out those tricks on. Jimmie, for she’s defenseless. There’s only once in a while that a Sir Galahad or whatever his name was, like you, conies to her defense. I’ve often wondered how in the world Alamie could stand all the slush that’s handed out to her and not get her hands frosted as well as a frozen face. She just smiles at ’em, Jimmie, and doesn’t hear a word they say. I asked her once if she hadn’t j stuffed her ears with cotton an I she said; “ ’No, dear, but I just draw my hearing inside of ine and I don’t hear a thing unless it’s a sentence that has the word “hat” In it.’ ” “Yes, Judy, Alamie's a great girl, isn’t she? But just now I want, to talk about yourself. If you must have come to the city and I don’t see just yet why you came at all. what in the world made you take such a position? Surely, your Dad didn’t let you come without money enough to tide you over until you could find something and not vvotk in that restaurant?” “Dad did give me two hundred and fifty dollars and it was stolen from me right in that restaurant the first night I got here. When 1 went to pay for my dinner I found my hag was gone. The manager said l was trying to beat them out of it.” “And that’s Just what he would do the dirty bum,” interrupted Jimmie. “I tell you T was awfully frightened. I didn't know what I was go- • ing to do, but after a good deal of | bluster, Air. Sterns said T could help jln the bat checking station to help pay for the meal I had just eaten.” | “I think I'll go back and bust Ills : nose,” remarked Jimmie, sotto voce. | “Don’t bother about him, dear, I ' was mighty glad of it, because, you see, I met Alainie. She was the first woman I had spoken to except that awful pallavering thing in tho women's dressing loom, since I left home. I didn't know I cared so much for my own sex. I thought I liked men best. But you see I was so discouraged I was almost ready to go borne, and I knew if I did, I would have to marry Chuck.” “What do you mean ’Chuck,’” asked Jim in a choked voice.
“I mean just what I say. You know Charlie Becker, don't you?” “Yes, I knew him, but we never chummed together a bit. I was the son of tho Irish grocer, Costello, who drove his father's delivery wagon from house to house and lie was the son of the banker. lie went to Harvard with an allowance and I worked my way through Cornell, so you see we didn't have much in common. I don't think he ever spoke to me after we went to college and 1 don't think to this day he knows that I am a college man, if that means anything.” (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Inc.) Martha Lee Says YOU CAN’T EXPECT LOVE FROM LOVE-CHEAT
Odd, how much faith cheats have in each other! Like honesty among thieves, perhaps. And the worse the cheat, the more honesty he or she expects. At least that’s true in this game
of love. Everyone's out after the Blue Bird. But no blue bird ever nested in a rusted cage. Elusive thing love is, haunting, devilish, tantalizing. And some folks think two birds in the bush are worth one hi the hand. And they further think the first bird won't fly away while they're catching the second. When a man makes love to a'mdrrled woman he does so because she lets him. How then can she raise tho hew and cry of “cheat!” when he chooses to leave her for other game? He is only cheating a cheater! She doesn't enhance his respect for her by cheating tho man she married. He knows she's cheating. She knows he’s cheating by making love to her. Why cheats have faith in each other, only God knows! Hopo springing eternal in the human breast, I guess! Cheating Cheaters Pear Martha Lee: T would like to ask a few question* of Brown Keys. Brown Eye*, you say you have been going with a fellow for lour years amt that you are married. Are you sure that the fellow is no# married? The reason that I ask is that I know of a man that left three weeks ago and he also likes to gamble. He has also been makinic love to me. and 1 am a married woman too. Would It be asking too much of you to put lit* Initials in the paper? If the initials of your friend correspond with those of mine. I will let you know. If It is the same one I think we should know if wc are wasting our love on a man like him. BROWN EYES NO. 2. Well, the matter need go no further than right here. I can give you your answer without the Initials. You've been wasting your "love” ever since you began to give it to your friend, who left three weeks ago. What did you expect to get from a man who would freely make lovo to another man’s wife? Constancy? Devotion? Story-book love? I can understand love starvation. I can understand yearning for perfection. But what amazes me Is the crass stupidity and unbounded faith of the average lovo-chent! If you arc tired of your husband's love, If you want a better, then free yourself first and look for it afterward.
