MORALS TESTS CHEAT YOUTHS (Continued From Page 1) rators in these clinics were placed in situations where they were strongly tempted to commit some sin. if they cast themselves from the mount, or even looked approvingly upon the kingdoms of the world, they were marked “O.” If they loudly but discourteously rebuked the tempter, they were marked “10.” Youths Temtped In these tests the unguarded boy was tempted to steal. He found a needed purse with every opportunity for concealment, though he was watched through a keyhole. He was given too much change and, unless he rebuked the carelessness of the clerk, he was worse than his father. He was tipped for a slight service and was marked “O” if he did not thrust back the coin. He was tempted to lie by assenting to exaggerated praise of his school progress. So similarly with a dozen other cunningly devised tests. TTie test by which children were tempted to cheat is perhaps the best illustration. It is entitled: “Can the subject be trusted not to cheat in examination?” Examiner Faints The approved method is as follows: The subjects are herded into classrooms and elaborate precautions are taken to suggest the ease Md frequency of cheating. For purpose the boys are seated from each other and ,are faced by an examiner and two assistants who are trained to work like detectives appplying the third degree. The test consists of certain written work upon a pad folded over concealed wax paper. After the work is completed, the lower sheets are secured by the examiner who has stolen a copy from each pupil, one of his helpers reads slowly the correct words, allowing each pupil to Grandmother Knew There Was Nothing: So Good for Congestion and Colds ns Mustard But the old-fashioned mustard plaster burned and blistered. make corrections upon his own paper. As he reads the last word, he falls in a faint —somewhat as Ananias did on a similar occasion. Tests “Successful” The second assistant and the chief carry out their fallen comrade, first ordering pupils to keep their seats. The pupils who take advantage of their absence to add words not written before, are readily detected as cheats. By the time they are detected, however, they must realize that their honored instructors are cheats, also. These tests were “successful.” Ttmre was much sinning and the relieved examinerrs reported the facts to the newspaper headliners and to the radio clergymen. This started something. Professional uplifters and their near relatives have ceased to quote from the Constitution of the United States and from the Sermon on the Mount and now quote from the Standardized Immorality Tests. Not Convincing Os course these tests were contemptible and showed greater depravity on the part of examiners than on the part of children. They were not convincing, for manifestly they could not be opplied to the children of a past generation and they were not applied to adulis. “Can the subject be trusted not to peep when an honorable person would keep his eyes closed?” For grownups, this is a stickler. When are the times when an honorable man or woman actually does keep his eyes closed? The tests did not prove that children were worse than their elders, nor that they were worse than earlier children. They. merely
